We’re delighted to share the news that uMed has partnered with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research to run its smell test study in the UK, as part of a global programme to explore the link between smell loss and Parkinson’s disease.

The smell test study, which is part of MJFF’s landmark PPMI initiative, will utilise uMed’s network of more than 500 primary care provider groups in the UK to engage eligible participants. uMed will facilitate the distribution of 15,000 University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Tests (UPSIT), to individuals aged 60 and older in the UK without Parkinson’s.

Through this partnership, The Michael J. Fox Foundation will have access to hundreds of primary care providers whose involvement in clinical studies is critical for the advancements in research. Without uMed, these non-traditional research sites often lack the financial and human capital or the technical tools required to regularly engage their patients while balancing care.

We'd like to say a massive well done to our Study Support Nurse Laura Newman for completing the Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike 2023 this weekend to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Laura braved 33 degrees and the very hilly landscape of the Jurassic coast to complete the 26.2 mile hike, so far raising £480 for people living with cancer. Well done Laura! 👏

We are delighted to announce that uMed are supporting the UK’s largest research programme, Our Future Health UK!

We are working with our vast network of GP partners in the South of the UK to engage volunteers via SMS, inviting them to take part in this revolutionary programme.

Our Future Health will collect and link multiple sources of health and health-relevant information, including genetic data, across a cohort of 5 million people that truly reflects the UK population. This will create a world-leading resource for academic and commercial researchers to undertake discovery research on early indicators of disease, plus the opportunity to re-contact participants on a risk-stratified basis for secondary studies.

A great article reviewing the burdens faced by patients in the recruitment process and how the rising use of technology is having both a positive and negative impact on patient enrolment and retention.

Technology can minimise burden on the patient and help them feel valued. However if used incorrectly, these technologies can complicate trial participation and increase the burden. Patients benefit from sponsors that examine and execute strategies to help them feel more valued, better informed, actively engaged in their treatment, and more comfortable with participating.

Read the full article here:

The introduction of increasing amounts of technology into trials has been a double-edged sword. Delve into how, when used properly, these technologies can minimize patient burden and help participants to feel valued; misapplied, they complicate trial participation or increase patient burdens.

“Patients want to help with research, and it is about providing them the means of doing that in a way that is not burdensome, and that allows them to see how they have contributed”

Listen to uMed Founder Dr. Matt Wilson speak as a guest on the Transformation in Trials about how patients can benefit from population level research, and how automating consent and recruitment processes can broaden the net in terms of the number of patients involved in clinical trials. A broader patient population means that underrepresented groups gain access to clinical trials and this allows a much more detailed characterisation of an overall patient population.
