Mara Works is a brilliant company, set up by women to support women in Africa.

Not only is the bead jewellery stunning but they walk the walk and all the proceeds (yes, every penny) goes to fund school for girls in Africa in association with CAMFED.

We love the twist range (which can be used as a necklace or bracelet) and the vibrant colours are full of joy.

Every purchase makes a massive difference - one necklace alone funds a term of school costs.

Summer’s coming and this jewellery is everything.

Aching muscles, feeling stiff and uncomfortable. Not one of the often discussed symptoms of peri/menopause but a common one.

Why does it happen? Surprise, surprise, it’s linked to a number of hormonal changes.

Lower levels of testosterone can impact the body’s ability to build muscle, resulting in muscle weakness and fatigue. Reduced progesterone levels impact the amount of muscle relaxing neurotransmitters in the brain which can leave muscles feeling tight.

Your thyroid can also be a factor - a slow thyroid can cause muscle aches and tenderness.

S*x drive / feeling up for it / feeling frisky. Whatever you want to call it, a lot of us see a change through midlife.

78% of you felt your va va voom had left the building. Why? It’s a complex picture of desire (controlled by the brain) and arousal (the body’s response to the idea of s*x).

Desire can be impacted by fatigue, low mood, stress, a decline in self confidence and more.

Arousal? Changes to blood supply and vaginal issues can be factors.

Changing levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone are key but don’t overlook insulin resistance, iron levels, brain chemistry and disrupted sleep.

99% of you agreed that words can be hard to find and your thinking is foggy. Let’s just call that pretty much all midlife women, shall we?

Brain fog is a complex story and it’s about more than changing levels of oestrogen or being under slept and over loaded.

Insulin resistance is a key factor in how well your brain cells are fuelled - if they’re not getting the energy they need, cognitive function can go out the window. Low levels of testosterone can also impact decision making and memory.

Tired, knackered, fatigued? 97% of you agreed that you’ve less energy. It can range from having lost your get-up-and-go through to really (really) needing a snack in the afternoon through to finding it hard to get out of bed.

Yes, we have a lot of our plates but there’s some important midlife biology to consider. Starting with the obvious - fluctuating hormones can mean our sleep takes a hit. If we’re tired we’re less likely to be motivated to do exercise so miss out on its energising effect. If you’re low in the hormone cortisol, you can felt flat and burnt out. Insulin resistance can be a key factor too - our cells don’t receive enough fuel from the food we eat so we feel tired (our brains aren’t being powered, our muscles aren’t getting what they need etc). Then there’s having a slow thyroid or low levels of iron.

Please note there are medical conditions which can result in fatigue (such as pain, infections or sleep apnoea) - discuss these with your doctor if you think they apply to you).
