Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish fencing instructor, has often been credited with inventing the Swedish massage technique in the 19th century. The actual inventor was a Dutch man named Johan Georg Mezger. Mezger created the therapy as we know it today and gave the classic strokes French names. Effleurage is the name given to smooth gliding strokes, while squeezing, rolling, and kneading are referred to as petrissage.
