Iron deficiency is more common than many realise. In the UK, around 10% of women are iron deficient — and many don’t even know it.

Iron plays a vital role in producing haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. When levels drop, your body quite literally struggles to keep up.

Common symptoms include:

• Persistent fatigue – not just feeling tired after a long day, but a deep exhaustion that sleep doesn’t seem to fix. Even simple daily tasks can start to feel draining.
• Shortness of breath – climbing stairs or light activity may leave you feeling unusually breathless because your body isn’t transporting oxygen efficiently.
• Brain fog and poor concentration – low iron can affect cognitive function, making it harder to focus, think clearly, or remember things.
• Pale skin – haemoglobin gives blood its red colour, so lower levels can make skin appear paler or dull.
