Great article by our very own ICE Ortho Hip and Knee Clinic, West London 💪🏃🏾♂️
Today is Global Running Day, so who better to speak to then Lanserhof’s very own Consultant Knee and Hip Surgeon, Dr Arj Imbuldeniya, who himself also recently completed the 2024 London marathon.
As an orthopaedic specialist, he has helped treat 1000s of runners over the last 20 years.
Here are his top tips in connection with running:
1. Strength and conditioning work is key. Hit the gym at least once a week and work hard on building those leg, thigh and buttock muscles, doing 3 sets of 6-8 reps.
2. Get assessed for the correct footwear. I have flexible flat feet so need wide, stable-based shoes (such as the Hoka Arahi 6) that help prevent shin splints and uneven load on my ankles and knees.
3. Get your baseline cardiac and respiratory fitness tested so that you know your starting point.
4. Mix your weekly runs to include interval sessions, an easy run and a long run each week.
5. Get your gut used to race day fueling with carbohydrates drinks and gels.
The running team at Lanserhof consist of orthopaedic surgeons, sports doctors, scientists, physiologists, physiotherapists and trainers. Their state-of-the-art movement lab, gym and 3T MRI scanner can help you achieve your goals, just like they helped Dr Arj smash those 26.2 miles in April.
