What happens when young people turn to AI instead of people for psychological support?

This month’s ACPsych Journal Club explores a thought-provoking study on how adolescents and young adults are using tools like ChatGPT for mental health advice — and what this means for accessibility, safety, ethics, and the future role of psychologists.

For aspiring psychologists, it offers a valuable chance to think critically about help-seeking, digital care, and the realities of service gaps.

Across four weeks, we’ll explore:
Week 1 — Why young people are turning to AI for support
Week 2 — How strong the study is in terms of design and sample
Week 3 — Helpfulness, tone, and the limits of AI advice
Week 4 — Ethics, safety, and real-world implications for practice

This is a reflective space for curiosity, critical thinking, and professional growth — not about having the “right” answer. Join the Journal Club today and be part of the conversation.

What comes to mind when you think about uncertainty? Especially during the journey to becoming a clinical psychologist?

Our next ACPsych Journal Club explores Barry Mason’s influential article Towards Positions of Safe Uncertainty. It’s a piece that encourages us to move away from rushing into answers and instead develop a reflective stance rooted in curiosity.

For aspiring psychologists, this mindset is central to clinical work, supervision, and coping with the unpredictability of the DClinPsy process.

Across four weeks, we’ll explore:
• sitting with the unknown
• balancing expertise with curiosity
• noticing when we slip into unsafe certainty or unsafe uncertainty
• developing a grounded, reflective approach to professional growth

It’s a space for thoughtful discussion, critical thinking, and genuine development.

Join the conversation inside the ACPsych Hub — and start building your reflective stance.

The Theory of Planned Behaviour strengthens Formulation by clarifying how beliefs influence action.

-It supports Interventions that target attitudes, expectations, and perceived control.
-It enriches Communication by helping you explore ambivalence without judgment.
-It reinforces Assessment through structured exploration of intentions and motivations.
-It supports Diversity and Inclusion as you consider cultural influences on norms.

Using this theory shows thoughtful, evidence-led practice across SCRIPTED FLAG. Set up a free ACPsych Hub account to explore resources and begin your journey today.

Struggling to structure your answers in DClinPsy interviews? The STARR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result, Reflection—helps you showcase your experience with clarity and depth.

Here’s an example answer to the question: Tell us about a time in your clinical experience when things went well and why.

Situation – While working as an Assistant Psychologist in a CAMHS service, I supported a young person experiencing high anxiety and school avoidance. They struggled to engage in previous interventions, and their parents felt discouraged.

Task – My role was to build trust, deliver psychological interventions, and support the family in implementing strategies to improve school attendance and emotional well-being.

Action – I used a flexible, person-centred approach, incorporating their interests into sessions and adapting CBT techniques (such as…) to be more interactive. I collaborated with parents and school staff (by…), ensuring a consistent, supportive environment. I also sought supervision to refine my approach (towards… for example…), ensuring it remained evidence-based and developmentally appropriate.

Result – Over time, the young person’s anxiety reduced, and they gradually increased their school attendance. Their confidence grew, and their parents reported feeling more empowered in supporting them. The school also noted improved engagement in lessons.

Reflection – This experience reinforced the importance of collaboration, adapting interventions to individual needs, and using supervision effectively. It also highlighted the impact of small, consistent steps in building confidence and autonomy, aligning with core values of compassion, empowerment, and evidence-based practice.
