What happens when young people turn to AI instead of people for psychological support?

This month’s ACPsych Journal Club explores a thought-provoking study on how adolescents and young adults are using tools like ChatGPT for mental health advice — and what this means for accessibility, safety, ethics, and the future role of psychologists.

For aspiring psychologists, it offers a valuable chance to think critically about help-seeking, digital care, and the realities of service gaps.

Across four weeks, we’ll explore:
Week 1 — Why young people are turning to AI for support
Week 2 — How strong the study is in terms of design and sample
Week 3 — Helpfulness, tone, and the limits of AI advice
Week 4 — Ethics, safety, and real-world implications for practice

This is a reflective space for curiosity, critical thinking, and professional growth — not about having the “right” answer. Join the Journal Club today and be part of the conversation.

A quasi-experiment is a type of study that shares similarities with true experiments but lacks random assignment of participants. Researchers use this method when randomisation is not feasible or ethical but still aim to draw conclusions about causal relationships by controlling for other variables and interpreting the results carefully.

Stress and Coping Theory enriches Assessment as you explore stressors and coping strategies in depth. It strengthens Formulation by helping you identify patterns in how clients manage distress. It supports Interventions that promote resilience and adaptive coping. It enhances Communication as you validate emotional reactions. It reinforces Diversity and Inclusion by recognising cultural influences on coping. Reflecting on this theory shows thoughtful, holistic practice across SCRIPTED FLAG. Quantitative research relies on numeric data and statistical analysis to explore relationships and test hypotheses. It typically involves large sample sizes and tools like surveys, experiments, or observational methods. This type of research allows for generalizing findings to larger populations, making it valuable in fields like psychology, sociology, and education.
