Ancient African crops listed in the «Future 50 foods report »
By 2050, the world population is to reach ten billion which will all need to be fed with limited resources. Building the resilience of the global food system is crucial to provide everyone with nutritious food with a low impact on the planet.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in collaboration with Knorr and the Center of Public Heath Nutrition of Washington have created the "Future 50 foods” report published in 2019 which lists 50 plant-based foods we should eat to keep ourselves and the planet healthy.
The vision behind this list is to empower each one of us in taking action to change to the food system through conscious food choice.
The 50 foods which made it on this list were selected on the basis of their high nutritional value, low impact on the planet, accessibility, taste and affordability . Among the 50 foods selected, 10 are ancient African crops which includes the fonio grain and the moringa.
What to do?
➡️Eat a plant-based diet : It is thought by most people as a diet that excludes any sort of meat and derivatives from animal. British Nutrition Foundation scientists defines the plant-based as a diet mostly based on plant such as grains, vegetables, fruits, pulses, nuts and can include a small portion of meat. Research shows that a plant-based diet has health and environmental benefits.
➡️Diversify your diet for your health and the planet’s and contribute to fairer trade:
75% of the global food supply only comes from 12 plants and 5 animals. Just 3 plants (rice, maize and wheat) make up of 60% of our calories from plants. There are between 20,000 and 50,000 edibles plants, of which 120 to 150 are regularly consumed by humans. Diversifying our diet will drive a higher demand of forgotten crops and positively impact our health and the lives of farmers in developing countries.
What change are you going to make?
