Some helpful tips if you're worried about your mental health this Christmas:
With Christmas fast approaching, here are some tips to help you manage any stress, anxiety or overwhelm you may be feeling:
- Manage your expectations and try to be realistic. This year may not be the best Xmas ever, you may not be able to see everyone you love or you may feel sad on the day. That's okay. Let's be realistic and remind yourself that you can cope.
- Avoid comparing your celebrations to others. Comparisons often impact our self-esteem and lead to us feeling inferior. If you're prone to this, consider limiting your use of social media and focus on the good things you do have going on.
- Take breaks when it feels too much. Christmas changes routines and patterns that you might find really helpful the rest of the year. If it's all feeling too much, think about going for a walk, moving to another room, listening to music or asking for help so you can have a break.
- Everything in moderation. It can be tempting to over-indulge over the festive period but this often leads to feeling guilty, physically unwell, anxious or overwhelmed. Think about how much food or alcohol is good for you and don't be afraid to politely decline if you're feeling pressured by others.
- Look after yourself. You probably know what works well for you - whether it's a good night's sleep, exercise or spending time alone. Try to factor in these things over Christmas as they can play a big role in boosting your mood.
- Don't look back. If you suffer with depression or low self-esteem, reflecting on the past year can be very triggering. Focus on the positives, enjoying the moment you're in and setting goals you'd like to achieve in 2022.
