Looks who's back in town for a few days!

It has been great to see Veriola when she popped into the office today as she makes a flying visit from Germany for a few days.

I got to be a daughter this weekend . She’s 86 and we just can’t tie her down.😂❤️. She loves going out every day with us all worrying behind the scenes.

As ever, there was some fantastic event organisation by Kingston Chamber of Commerce

..."I never thought I would make a new friend so late in my life"...

So said one of our clients about our latest Caregiver of the month, Jayne.

Since joining us in April, Jayne immediately got stuck in and has been a real asset with her caring nature, hard work, punctuality and flexibility.

She is helpful, always goes the extra mile and as we have seen from the above, is well liked by all of her clients!

Well done Jayne, and keep up the good work!

The Club will then be back at Worcester Park Baptist Church on Tuesday 4th November between 10.30am-12.00pm, refreshed and ready to welcome everyone again!

💛😇

I’ve been a caregiver with Visiting Angels North Surrey since January 2022, and one of the things I’m grateful for is the chance to keep learning and growing. Recently, I completed the Zero Su***de Alliance training, which was both powerful and thought-provoking.

Su***de awareness is so important, as caregivers, we often walk alongside people through some of their most vulnerable moments. Having the knowledge, tools, and confidence to recognise signs and offer support can truly make a difference.

This topic feels especially close to my heart after losing a friend last year. It’s a reminder that so many of us are touched by this in some way, and that reaching out, listening, and showing kindness can mean more than we realise.

The Zero Su***de Alliance course is free and available online, (Link below) so if you’d like to do it too, I really recommend it.

Thank you to Visiting Angels and Zero Su***de Alliance for providing such valuable opportunities to learn and reminding us that every conversation and every bit of understanding matters.

We can make such a difference to the experience of dementia by the way that we all act and support a person, enabling them to navigate situations independently through changes we have made.

Small changes can make a big difference 💙

People living with dementia may experience the world differently due to damage in the brain. This can lead to changes in perception, including:

Misperceptions – seeing one thing as something else (e.g. mistaking a shadow for a spider)
Misidentifications – confusing people or objects (e.g. thinking a son is their husband)
Hallucinations & Delusions – seeing or believing things that aren’t there
Time-shifting – mixing up past and present.

These experiences can be confusing or distressing for the person and those around them. But with understanding and support, you can help them feel safe and confident.

As explained by our @‌DementiaFriends team, something as simple as swapping a dark coloured mat – which could be mistaken for a hole in the ground – to a light coloured one could be helpful for a person living with dementia.

There are lots of little things you can do to support a person experiencing changes in perception, which might look like:

- Making sure glasses are worn and hearing aids are working (if used)

- Not moving furniture, or changing where things are kept

- Not drawing attention to their mistakes

- Improving lighting levels and reducing visual clutter

- Asking friends and relatives to introduce themselves when they arrive

- Describing the food and drink and where it is on the table

Busy, busy, busy!

We didn’t stop talking for a few hours at the Kingston University careers fair yesterday.

Tooba and Priya were leading the conversations, plus we had our Caregiver of the Year Parava giving real life experience and advice as to what it is like to combine working for Visiting Angels North Surrey whilst studying for a masters degree.

We spoke to over 300 people, and over 40 of them have already got in touch so it looks like the next wave of international students are on the way through!
