Proximal hamstring pain is a common issue in both athletes and active individuals, often presenting as discomfort high up in the buttock region where the hamstring tendons attach to the pelvis. In many cases, this is caused by proximal hamstring tendinopathy, although some patients may have a partial or complete tendon tear.

In this new article, we look at why these injuries occur, typical symptoms, and the current evidence-based treatment pathways, including physiotherapy, load management, targeted injections when appropriate, and surgical repair for more severe tendon damage.

A preclinical study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2025 Annual Meeting found that patients who undergo early ACL reconstruction have a lower risk of developing osteoarthritis compared to those who delay surgery or opt for non-surgical treatment.

Immediate surgical intervention leads to lower immune cell activity, fewer joint changes, and less inflammation that leads to arthritis later in life.

In our latest article, Mr Shah Punwar explains the findings and discusses when early ACL reconstruction may be the best option for both athletes wanting a rapid return to sports as well as patients looking to protect their knee health long-term.
