This study by Sulowska-Daszyk et al. (2024) found that a single session of TMJ soft tissue therapy had a beneficial impact on jaw mobility and cervical spine mobility in women diagnosed with myofascial pain surrounding the TMJ.
Massage, trigger point, and myofascial techniques, including intra-oral, were used to relax the masticatory (chewing) muscles and release fascial restrictions.
Positive findings for the benefits of TMJ soft tissue therapy, although it would be interesting to know how long the results from one treatment lasted for the participants.
Treating the TMJ is not an overnight fix. It is a complex area, and how many treatments are needed depend on various factors surrounding the individual, such as the root cause, severity of their symptoms, and what forms of self-care they are practising.
Another interesting observation in this study was the benefits TMJ therapy may have on the feet. Again, longer research would benefit findings, but such studies help deepen our understanding of how different bodily systems and parts all impact each other.
TMJ disorders are never unique to one cause and historically lack research. As a holistic practitioner, I am always expanding my knowledge so that I can assist my clients in their journeys towards better overall health and wellbeing.
