Self care is a really important part of making sure we’re looking after our physical and mental well being. This can look like meditation, affirmations, eating three meals a day, taking time to read or even using your favourite moisturiser. I sometimes feel worried that living in the west, in an individualistic society and particularly practising as a counsellor we can perpetuate the idea that mental health and well-being is the sole responsibility of the individual.
I wonder how we might move into practising both self care and community care. How can I let people show up for me? How do I give and receive care in my community? Who even is my community and how can I grow and build with them. How can I invest in my community in the knowledge that I am also investing in myself. Knowing that if my community has it, so do I.
Today I try to remember that it’s not all on me. I will give as much as I am able (and no more). I will learn to lean on the people around me for care and support.
