🌿 Horatio’s Garden at RHS Chelsea 2023 was a truly inspiring space, designed by with healing, dignity and accessibility at its heart.

At the Magic of Plants Conference, hosted by the West Yorkshire Hardy Plant Society, (pictured with our very own Saul Walker) shared the story behind the garden’s creation.

The design was shaped by listening to patients, staff and families at the Sheffield spinal injuries centre. This was not a show garden made real, but a real garden thoughtfully created for Horatio's Gardens in Sheffield.

✨ Highlights from Charlotte’s talk

Every element had purpose. Windows and water features were placed to be enjoyed from a bed or wheelchair.

Soft, layered planting created dappled light for those with reduced temperature regulation.

Stone cairns, built by Yorkshire dry-stone wallers, symbolised way finding and recovery.

The use of a sustainable paths reflected a commitment to environmental care while supporting full accessibility.

Charlotte reminded us that gardens are places of connection, confidence and care. Patient voices shaped every detail, from movable seating and private timber pods to the textures chosen for comfort and calm.

This garden is going to be part of Horatio’s Garden Sheffield and is currently planted up.

*Appointment news - Barbican Conservatory*

We are thrilled to be appointed to join the team dedicated to the renewal of the iconic Barbican Conservatory. We will be working closely with Allies & Morrison, Asif Khan, Buro Happold and Head Gardener Marta Lowcewicz and her team on the project.

After 40+ years, the Conservatory’s infrastructure is at a critical tipping point:
⚡️ The glass envelope is failing, causing significant botanic and surfaces deterioration.
⚡️ Cracks in the concrete structure are causing leaks, damaging the theatre below.
⚡️ Outdated technical and operational systems no longer support the incredible horticultural work of the team.
⚡️ Major accessibility challenges mean the space is not yet a place everyone can enjoy.

What will the renewal mean?
🌱 Revitalising planting: Plants remain the star of the show, with world class environmental conditions and facilities
🌱 Improving accessibility: New plans will open up previously inaccessible and closed off areas, ensuring the space is welcoming and inclusive for all.
🌱 Future-proofing: Combining cutting-edge innovation and sustainability credentials to secure the Conservatory for generations to come.

Within our team, we have brought together an incredible cohort of heritage and horticultural specialists to ensure this transformation is considered, rigorous and appropriate. Joining us are horticultural experts Matt Pottage, Christopher Young, and Phil Griffiths, alongside modernist landscape history authority Karen Fitzsimon.
