This is an interesting study but I don't think it is as revealing as it might first appear.
The nature of CBT and PCT are very different and the kind of results achievable are very different.
A person seeking results for a clearly defined and immediate problem my gain quicker results through the use of CBT but I am curious how that person is able to remain without returning to therapy?
PTC in treating the whole human experiencial phanomenon with is able to nurture long term results having wide ranging resolt impact an individuals outlook and happiness throughout the individuals life!
Person Centred Therapy relies on an understanding of and a belife in an individuals capacity for, and innate drive toward, self actualization. To this end the therapist draws on the necessary and sufficient conditions of, empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regards as a structure which guides the therapeutic relationship.
In my estimation PCT lends itself perfectly to a pluralist approach and so provides a secure structure within which to draw on a wide verity of modalities, including CBT, when used as a contributory modality, within an eclectic approach.
However when that is flipped, although an understanding of PCT can inform and enhance a CBT platform, the nature of CBT excludes what might be understood as the organic and nurturing nature of PCT. It isn't interested in treating the whole person or nurturing the self actualizating tenancy, because it isn't an holistic therapy. It is a practical tool box for making repairs.
