Push day at the studio today

One of the most important things for a good workout is a good warm up

The first couple of slides are strengthening and stabilising the shoulder joint

Then move into some hip, glutes mobility and strengthening

Don’t neglect this stuff

This is what keeps you injury free and also if you want to build muscle it’s much easier if your body is moving how it should be

If your shoulders are all locked up and stiff it will have an impact on how well you can contract your chest, shoulders etc

Get into the habit of warm ups like this and you will see your workouts improve

It’s also what I credit for being able to carry my 2 year old on my shoulders today on two school runs without any pain

If you want help getting in shape and moving pain free get in touch to book a free trial PT session

Todays pull workout

Mixing things up with how I do deadlift

Conventional deadlifts are great but in everyday life picking up my kids etc there is nothing conventional about it

So sandbag deadlifts and deficit kettlebell deadlifts are great for working the spinal erectors

Then some grip strength work

I love working on grip at the moment, with these bar rolls and forearm curls

Grip strength helps keep the elbows healthy also from all the kid carrying

Don’t go into another winter thinking f**k it

I can get fat now

All it does is make it harder when the summer comes

And healthy habits is not just about how you look

It’s about how you feel

Don’t really like the winter?

Dark, cold and wet days not your thing?

Well it’s going to feel more sh*tty if you just sit around eating and not exercising

Movement and good habits will help you get through winter in a more positive way

I hate it when I hear people who go on a diet say

“I’m not eating carbs because I’m trying to lose weight”

“No I’ve given up chocolate as I’m on a diet”

“I’m not going out to eat because I’m on a diet”

I hate it because I know this will fail

If you’re dieting for your wedding day or birthday or holiday

It’s ok to do these things as a short term quick fix

But if you want to lose weight, change how you look and keep those results

Then it’s not the approach

You need to work on your lifestyle diet

What I mean by that is you need to change how you behave and act around food

You need to change how your emotions dictate your food choices

How your diet fits into your life needs to change

It’s all good saying you’ll give up carbs..but for how long? What happens when you reintroduce them

It’s ok to say I’m giving up processed food but what happens when you finally cave into some Choclate? Have you failed?

A diet without processed food in it would be a healthy lifestyle one no doubt

But unfortunately the society we live in it’s too easy to access and you know how good some of it tastes so never eating it again just isn’t viable

So you need to work on your current behaviours and habits around food while improving the quality of your overall diet and allow flexibility to have some tasty foods

This is not easy to achieve as most people just fall into the same dieting traps time and time again

How often do you go on social media and follow people

Maybe even people you actually know

But a lot of the time people you just know through the internet

And comparing your life to theirs

Maybe how they parent and make it seem so easy

Maybe the big house and illusion of success they portray

Or how in shape they seem

But a lot of Instagram “influencers” I hate that f**king term are completely non relatable to you

You can compare yourself with kids to someone who has none

You can’t look at someone who seems happy and successful through social media

When actually they are miserable

You then feel inadequate through this comparison

Focus on you and what you can control

And follow people who make you feel good

I am a parent living in the rat race and completely understand how hard it is to find time to look after yourself while kids zap all your energy

Thats why I want to offer you 30 days of free coaching

You’re not dealing with your emotions when you drink or over eat

You are avoiding dealing with them

That is the mask

Having a couple of drinks with someone and getting things off your chest then that’s dealing with them

But drinking on your own is excuse the pun bottling up your emotions

Health is multifaceted

It’s not just what you eat or exercise you do

It’s the mentality and mindset you have

It’s how you deal with your emotions

You never meet a alcoholic who hasn’t got a deeper reason for the excessive drinking

You never meet an obese person where there isn’t a deeper reason for the over eating

Even if that person can’t see it themselves they are using these things to avoid dealing with the root cause

Because eating and drinking brings a short glimpse of happiness and allows them to avoid dealing with the real problem

If you always screw up trying to live a healthier lifestyle it’s probably because you aren’t changing absolutely everything

You aren’t changing your values, you aren’t dealing with your emotions in the right way

You hate your job..that will have an impact on your behaviours

You hate your spouse that will have an impact on your behaviours

You value things that mean you compare your life to others all the time never feeling good enough…that will impact your behaviour

If you are suppressing who you truly are…that will have an impact on your behaviour

You need to deal with the problems, have conversations, get professional help

And if you are ready to start making changes

As I’m writing this I have been slapped back down to reality

After having a whole night off the kids just the two of us

I am now being repeatedly punched in the stomach until I let my 2 year old daughter watch YouTube on my phone

Not sure I really need to make my point much more

But being a parent is hard work

You give up so much of yourself for them

That it’s so easy to lose the person you was

It’s so easy to fall into bad eating and drinking habits

Gaining weight from the habits you have formed to cope with the stress of parenting

But it’s important for you to find some time for yourself

Otherwise it’s just a ticking time bomb of being overweight, feeling unattractive and probably needing some anti depressants

It’s not easy to do on your own, but that’s why I am here

I am a parent living in the rat race and I have helped many parents navigate the chaos to find some time to work on themselves

It’s not your diet that’s the problem

Well it is…but you are looking in the wrong place for the answer

It’s what’s making you eat that way that’s the problem

Its how you use food to deal with life

It’s how you sink a couple of pints or bottles of wine to unwind from a week in a life you can’t stand

How you choose to sit on the sofa with a pack of biscuits because the kids have pushed your limits all day

It’s how you eat when you are upset, but you also eat when you are happy and you also eat when you are celebrating

You need to take your food away from being a reaction to your emotions
