Oriane introduces her online Dharma Yoga classes
--
Dharma is a complete practice that encompasses breathing, physical postures, meditation and relaxation in order to achieve radiant health, a peaceful life and, eventually self realisation. Dharma Yoga is traditional, yet contemporary - perfect for the fast-paced world of today.

The physical Dharma practice tones and invigorates the body and mind, leading to enhanced flexibility, strength, balance and concentration. The breathing exercises regulate the heartbeat, de-stress the nervous system and calm the mind. The guided deep healing relaxation relieves tensions, slow down the thoughts, and recharges the physical body.

The breathing is soft. The hip openers, back bends, inversions and balances unique, creative and inspiring. Dharma yoga merges everything together to channel you towards deep realisation of the Universal Consciousness: “I am you, you are me”. "Imagine you are everyone and reaching everywhere”.

The Dharma practices have opened my heart in many new ways, cleared impurities, negativity and addictive behaviours. Have made me kinder, compassionate, curious, balanced and acceptant. It goes way beyond the challenging physical asanas. That depth of connection and understanding is here for everyone.

Classes will be a gradual exploration of breathing techniques, original Dharma Series and guided Yoga Nidra.

Welcome all to the world of DHARMA.

Namaste, Oriane

We've been taking the step further during July by building on our awareness of the breath and focusing on finding lightness through connecting each asana with purposeful movement of energy.

As we become more familiar with what grounds us in our asana practice, we explore where we can bring in a sense of fluidity and flight.

To fully articulate a pose, lightness and stability are essential. A good foundation gives room to go further and expand out from the core.

Core encompasses abdominal, back and shoulder muscles, as well as hip flexors. The strength from this region is the anchor which lifts us into flight when engaged fully.

Once we relate the experience of strength with lightness on the mat, we peel away layers of prejudices about how our practice should be.

We slowly let go of fear but not in reckless abandon.

Incremental changes lead to big realisations, we slowly become less forceful and rigid in our ways. We start taking on challenges objectively, giving ourselves the space to act (instead of react). We find strength in our resolve and intention, yet calm and gentle in our words and actions.

Let July be the month of discovering ease and freedom in our movements as we connect to this sense of power through lightness.

“When an asana(pose) is done correctly, the body movements are smooth, and there is lightness in the body and freedom in the mind." BS Iyengar

June's focus has been breath. Useful when working challenging transitions. We don't stay witness to the breath, but use it as a gateway to dharana(concentration/focus).

Focus for June: Breath

This month, we delve more into why breath is so vital – not just on the mat.

Modern life usually equates to busyness and as we get to the core of it, we become tense and fixed mentally and physically. Our time on the mat, moving the body through asana practice breaks the mould or patterns we shape ourselves in.

Awareness of breath and conscious breathing fuels the practice, transforming it from a usual exercise routine into a powerful tool for the mind, body, and spirit. It moves the energy and helps the body ease into postures. With controlled, deep breaths we tune in to what arises emotionally and feel the sensations in our bodies. Breathing deeply in yoga helps avoid injury.

Breathing consciously is the essence of yoga as it assists us in connecting with the subtle energy within. The breath is our barometer, our guide through the levels of consciousness.

Controlled breath grounds us to the present moment, releasing our hold on the past and our expectations of the future. It activates the more evolved parts of our brain in the cerebral cortex which has a relaxing and balancing effect on emotions. Controlling the breath nurtures this part of the brain, eventually making it more dominant over its primal counterpart (medulla oblongata).

In essence, by consciously breathing, we become less reactive, more connected with our true selves, and not a slave to the fluctuations of the mind. We become sharper and more focused as we experience a stillness in the mind.

Inhale. Exhale.

Last month, the essence of our practice was steady (sthira) and comfortable (sukha). We explored a balancing act between strength & flexibility, masculine & feminine, intuition & reason. Discovered our capacities to remain gentle and sensitive to our body’s signals even when the practice is strong and energetic. Cultivated a balance in our habitual inclinations with a sensitive understanding of what best serves us in the present moment.

In the month of May, we add a layer and connect to our physical and mental strength through tenacity, perseverance, and maintaining an unwavering focus on bettering ourselves no matter how challenging it can get.

In yoga there is a set of actions and attitudes practiced to achieve liberation from suffering and improve our connection with the outside world; this is known as Niyamas.

Tapas is one of the niyamas – it translates as heat and refers to the burning-off of impurities. This niyama is about going against the grain of habit and complacency and veering away from taking the easy route.

Tapas put into practice is the commitment to face challenges, and a spiritual determination not to give into desires, emotions, and any other influences that move us away from our best self. It is putting in the work of being the best version of ourselves, a practice of self-discipline, but not self-torture.

Use this month’s focus like a compass, to keep us pointed towards our true north, our truest nature.

To rid the body of toxins and our minds & hearts of impurities.

Our focus for March is backbends. Our sequences this month aim to strengthen not just the physical body but also the energy body by concentrating the mind through stillness and opening the heart space.

The month of March is a pivotal one in the year, days getting longer and warmer are signs that spring is among us. With this change, we focus on reminding ourselves of the tools that allow us to be receptive, open, and vulnerable to whatever this change brings.
