Here are some tips when looking after clients who need Peg Care.

1. Encourage Open Communication
Ask questions during handovers and multidisciplinary discussions. No question is too small when it comes to client safety.

2. Learn From the Client and Their Family
Families often know subtle signs of discomfort or distress. Be open to their insights and experiences.
Reflect on Practice

3. After care tasks, reflect on what went well and what could be improved. Curiosity drives continuous learning and better outcomes.

Curiosity is a powerful tool in delivering safe, person-centred care. When supporting clients with complex needs, including PEG feeding, a curious mindset helps carers move beyond routine tasks and truly understand the individual.

Key Tips:

Be Curious About the Person, Not Just the Procedure
Every client is unique. Take time to learn about their preferences, routines, comfort levels, and communication methods.

Ask “Why?” and “What’s Changed?”
If something feels different—reduced tolerance to feeds, changes in behaviour, or discomfort—explore it. Small changes can signal bigger issues.

Observe Closely and Thoughtfully
Notice non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, or changes in mood, especially for clients who cannot communicate verbally.

Understand the PEG, Not Just the Task
Be curious about how the PEG works, why it’s used, and potential risks. This knowledge supports safer care and quicker identification of concerns.
