Melanie Klein

Although she de-emphasized the importance of biological drives, particularly the sexual drive, and emphasized the importance of interpersonal relationships in the psychoanalytic field. She particularly stressed the importance of the mother-child relationship in child development. After WWI, Melanie developed a technique called “play therapy.” This is currently used worldwide. She created this technique to uncover children’s unconscious motivations. Melanie Klein believed that young children, through play, projected their own feelings and emotions in therapeutic sessions. Klein went ahead to show that the way young kids played with toys actually showed earlier infantile fantasies plus anxieties.

Melanie Klein would want to contribute and share her thoughts in the following organizations to help people better understand themselves. Looking for theories about human contact during childhood that are relevant to everyone's life.

Klein's theory emphasized the idea of objects, which are related to human contact during infancy. The most important objects to a child are the mother and the mother's breast. According to Klein, infants are born with an unconscious fantasy life.

The place where my psychoanalytic interest and journey began. Budapest always has a special place in my heart.

It was truly not an easy period of my life. Dealing with my beloved brother Emmanuel's death and getting married the next year. I also suffered through deep depression throughout all the pregnancies and it was hard for me to recover until I was analyzed by Dr. Sandor Ferenczi.

These pictures contain the memorable experiences I had and the important people I have met since we moved in 1909.

Drawings of the first child patients I analyzed in Berlin around 1921–1925. Berlin was still the center of psychoanalytic activity at that time.

I was only allowed to embark on my first analysis of a child when I fully became a member of the Berlin Psychoanalytic Society. It was the right decision to move there rather than return back to Budapest. To learn from the great pioneers of psychoanalysis is a great honor for me.

It was really tough however, and as someone who does not have a degree, I was not taken seriously by my colleagues in Berlin. Nevertheless, the support of the now late Dr. Karl Abraham, then president of the International Psychoanalytic Association, became my refuge of strength.

Aside from him, I extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Ernest Jones and the Stracheys for their encouragement, for helping me publish my work, and for preparing the ground for my ideas in British society.

I am also grateful for those that I've met and bonded with during my stay there that have become an important part of my life; Joan Riviere (a sweet reunion) and Susan Isaacs.

WORK HISTORY!💼

While traveling to work in Slovakia, Melanie skipped home and this meant her marriage was seriously affected. She diverted her attention to books and started learning different languages to fill the voids in life. In 1910, her family made the move to Budapest and this totally changed her life. Here, she encountered Freud’s work for the very first time.

After this, psychoanalysis became her major interest. She decided to get analysis with his colleague Ferenczi and together with his support, she started to analyze young children. (CLICK PICTURE TO VIEW MORE)

Did you know? 🧠💭

Melanie became engaged at the age of 19 to Arthur Stephen Klein, a friend of her brother's. During their two year engagement, Melanie studied art and history at Vienna University.

Though she regretted it later in life, Melanie passed up medical school to follow her husband. Consequently, she never received an academic degree. Throughout her career, many did not respect her views or take her seriously due to her lack of proof of medical knowledge.
