THE RELICS OF SAINT BERNADETTE COME TO ST JOSEPH’S BIRMINGHAM!
What a surprise and great joy we had when a telephone call came asking would we like the Relics of Saint Bernadette to come to our Home. You can imagine the reply! What a privilege we were to have- How humbled we felt...
Much preparation for the visit was undertaken by everyone; Sisters, Staff and Residents.
Our Residents prepared a beautiful Rosary display with a photograph of each residents depicting a particular decade. They also contributed greatly to our small Lourdes Grotto that appeared outside the Chapel.
A display depicting the life of Saint Bernadette and the story of the Apparitions proved very informative and was appreciated by all.
Our staff (mainly non- Catholics) started off initially ‘curious’- then built a very genuine interest and desire to know more and to participate in what they clearly understood was an extremely important visit for us.
A souvenir memento, of a prayer card, medal from Lourdes and a small candle with an image of St Bernadette was prepared for everyone as a keepsake.
Three generous people gave the money for the flowers for the day … everyone wanted to feel a part of this occasion.
The day of the visit arrived- excitement, anticipation, emotion and so much more. This day was also to be the first time we had welcomed any people back to Mass since Covid- What a joy to see our group of AJJ members and some Volunteers once again.
Archbishop Bernard Longley, Bishop David McGough and several priest friends arrived- then the blue relic Tour van appeared at our gate- Saint Bernadette had come to visit us and we felt truly blest
All of the residents were in the Chapel and Gallery with their two invited guests. Many of our staff were with the Community, AJJ members and Volunteers at reception. The staff were carrying lighted candles and were very happy to take part in the procession into the Chapel.
The Relics were formally welcomed into the Diocese by the Archbishop and then our Procession began. Four very proud men (Phil and Danny –staff; Nick-AJJ; Mike-Volunteer carried the Relics). As we reached the Chapel our chorus multiplied as the whole congregation joined us.
Mass then began which included the Sacrament of the Sick- we truly felt like a ‘little’ Lourdes- every resident of the Home was present with us.
After Mass we had an hour and a half in which to personally reflect and venerate the Relics.
What peace, beauty, joy and emotion was expressed, experienced and witnessed! Our residents in their wheelchairs stretching with all their strength to be able to touch the Reliquary. Many went back several times.....
There was a sadness when it was time for the departure but as we processed out again singing our ‘Ave’s we felt truly blest and grace filled
All the intentions of each Little Sister and the General Chapter were remembered as we shared this very special time of prayer and emotion.
Several families have already emailed us following our visit and the time shared with the whole Community and have spoken of the tangible love, caring and prayer-
How truly fortunate we are and with St Jeanne Jugan we say “Thank you My God” and together we say:
Our Lady of Lourdes pray for us
Saint Bernadette pray for us
