Hair loss in ladies is a major problem. Many women are deficient in iron and ferritin. Some in other nutrients such as vitamin D. But you can also have hereditary hair loss on top.

If you are starting to lose hair, don’t wait. Get some blood work done from your GP. Get to a hair loss specialist asap as you don’t want your hair follicle to close. Once that happens, nothing will bring it back.

Finding a sunscreen when you have oily skin can be difficult. But it’s very individual to you.

Some good ones are Heliocare, they do a great gel oil free sunscreen that helps control oily skin in the skin. Altruist also do a fluid based one which is light and not too oily. HaruHaru wonder black rice mineral is good as well.

It’s a lot of trial and error but don’t listen to the comedogenic or non comedogenic stuff. It’s what your skin likes that matters!

Traction alopecia can be a result from certain hair styles. Pulling the hair back in a tight pony tail or bun, braiding constantly for example.

These styles put a lot of tension on the front of the hair so the loss is more from the front of the hair back.

It is important to stop tight hair styles and get treatment for this before the follicle closes all together and you end up with permanent loss of hair

Hereditary hair loss is a slower loss than things like telogen effluvium.

With hereditary hair loss you may notice your centre parting is slightly wider and your temples are thinning. The pony tail may be smaller gradually.

With telogen effluvium however, you hair loss is much more rapid. You must get blood tests to see if there is a reason. But there are a lot of causes including stress, trauma, operations etc.

Retinols and retinols are one of the best ingredients to use for anti-ageing, but they can also mess with your skin barrier if used incorrectly.

Retinols or retinols need to be used slowly, so once or twice a week for a couple of weeks and see how your skin goes. The more sensitive you are, the slower you need to go.

The amount of retinol or retinal is also critical. A pea sized amount for the whole of the face. Then another pea sized amount for the neck.

The concentration of retinal or retinol is also important. Use too high a dose and your skin barrier will pay! No need for prescription strength retinoids for most people.

The best serum I’ve found for hair loss is AnteAge MD. There are 9 human identical growth factors and this is the key difference between AnteAge MD and 90% of other hair products.

The home kit can be massaged if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on radio or chemotherapy.

Nothing works as fast either! And trust me I have tried a lot with my own hair.

Sunscreen/SPF is critical for preventing skin cancer and skin ageing.

The Clinicare Dermocorrective SPF50 has it all. The sun protection, a tint, stabilised Vitamin C, moisturisers, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid and quite a few other bits and pieces!

So if you don’t like skincare fuss and bother and just want a great all round product, look no further!

Retinols are amazing and a staple of antiageing. But retinols can irritate the skin.

There are a few key points about this.

Start slow, once or twice a week.

Small amounts of retinol only. Pea sized for the whole of the face.

Start with a lower concentration if retinols. Either retinol or retinaldehyde but not prescription strength.

Which retinols have you tried and what was the outcome?

Azelaic acid can be a game changer for oily skin but 10% doesn’t always cut it.

Your GP can prescribe higher % of Azelaic acid which may be better for your skin type. The more oily the more likely you need something a but higher than 10%.

What are your experiences of Azelaic acid?

Being disappointed with skin treatments such as microneedling, skin boosters, polynucleotides, is one of the most common things I see in clinic.

But often, patients haven’t been informed of what is best for their individual skin. The skin treatments are not part of a plan, not part of a long term strategy. So they’ve not had the desired effect on the skin.

Having random treatments won’t help in the longer term. It’s like going to the gym 3 times and expecting results. Skin has to ge worked on long term. Maintenance is non negotiable for good quality skin. That’s not just about skin treatments but also rest, nutrition, managing stress etc.

Dry skin cleansers part 2.

Milky cleansers are helpful such as the Byoma or Inkey list ones. Squalene can also help and the Ordinary does a nice one.

The key is not having tight skin after cleansing as that is a sign your cleanser is drying you out. 💜

Dry skin and cleansers making your skin feel tight? That’s not the right cleanser.

Try not to have any actives in your cleanser if you have dry skin. Niacinamide, AHAs or BHAs are drying.

You should ideally feel nothing other than clean when you’ve washed the skin.

A few I like are Jelly Joker by Geek & Gorgeous and HaruHaru wonder black rice but the one without AHAs.
