World Sight Day was on Thursday 8 October this week. I reflect on my week, the many patients I saw and the operations I performed, to restore sight, or to reduce the risk of a patient losing their sight. My patients ranged from those over 70 years old for cataract surgery to the most premature babies in the country, who had laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity, born at 26 weeks instead of 40 weeks, so early that they still haven’t reached what would have been their due date.
My most complex surgery was for the effects of advanced and poorly controlled diabetes in someone of working age. I see so many patients who have worked hard to keep their diabetes well controlled, take their medicines as advised, and do everything they should, but still see progression of diabetes over the years. Some don’t manage to achieve stable control.
Advancing diabetes affects blood vessels in many parts of the body, the kidneys, nerves, heart, brain, eyes, and it is in the eyes that we can see the actual appearance of what the diabetes is doing - if it is showing up in the retina, it is also silently happening in all the other organs, long before it shows up as an abnormal blood or urine test.
If you have, or know someone with diabetes, please make sure to attend the annual diabetic eye photographic screening tests.
Sight is precious, the most precious sense.

HIndi/Urdu explanation of Cataracts, Cataract Surgery and Aftercare
If your mum has cataracts, and wants to know more about them, but would like to hear about it in her own language, then this is for you. In my experience with my patients, the minute they realise they can explain things in their own language, their face lights up and they are able to share so much more of what is troubling them That helps me give them the information they need, in their language, and hopefully in a way that they understand better, so that they can make a more informed choice about their care.

Watch my new video in Hindi/Urdu on Cataracts, Cataract Surgery and How to Look After Your Eye after a Cataract Operation.
