Today, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, I am celebrating not just women in general, but a special group whose voices are often unheard; women and girls living with Endometriosis.
This March being Endometriosis Awareness Month, we raise more awareness for women fighting silent battles. Women screaming in pain and agony, yet rarely believed. Women dismissed by healthcare providers. Women who asked for help and were told the pain was “all in their heads.”
I celebrate the women whose futures have been altered by this condition.
The women who have lost jobs, opportunities, friendships, and sometimes confidence because of it.
I celebrate the woman whose mailbox is filled with hospital letters for tests, appointments, and surgeries.
The woman whose pillow is soaked with tears day and night 😭.
The woman who sometimes feels as if God has forgotten her.
I celebrate the woman in the hospital today because of this battle.
The woman people never believed.
The girl who has no one to talk to; screaming for help but with no one to pat her on the back 😭.
I celebrate the woman who smiles while holding a hot water bottle.
The woman forcing a smile after pain medication.
The woman trying to conceive while endometriosis fights against her reproductive health.
To every woman who feels afraid of the future or feels like giving up, hold on.
You are stronger than you think.
You are seen.
You are valued.
Stand in front of a mirror today, place your hand on your chest and say:
“Well done (your name). Keep on keeping on.”
Thank you for your resilience. Thank you for your courage to keep living.
Happy International Women’s Day to every woman fighting battles both seen and unseen.
As a women’s health advocate, I believe deeply that we give in order to gain: gain awareness, strength, compassion, and a world where women’s pain is no longer ignored.
