Menopause is often framed as an ending. Evolutionary biology suggests it may mark the beginning of a new chapter, and neuroscience is starting to explain why.

The grandmother hypothesis offers one explanation: that post-reproductive women help strengthen the survival of families and communities across generations.

We introduced this theory at our recent Neuroscience of Menopause talk and it sparked so many conversations that we thought it deserved a closer look.

This March, for International Women’s Day and Endometriosis Awareness Month, we’re sharing work from artists, filmmakers, researchers, and activists bringing attention to a condition too often dismissed as invisible pain.

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women. New figures from Endometriosis UK suggest diagnosis now takes 9.4 years. Projects like the BAFTA-winning short film “This is endometriosis” help change that, bringing patients’ experiences into the open and making it harder to ignore the reality of this condition.
