Exam season can be overwhelming for many young
people, and for children with Autism, it can bring
additional challenges.

As a parent, you may also feel overwhelmed when supporting your child’s exam preparation and wellbeing. Understanding their support entitlements and access arrangements is key, but there are also practical strategies to help children feel prepared, calm, and confident as exams approach.

* Create a Calm Study Environment
The right environment makes a big difference. Try to provide a quiet, organised, and low-distraction space for studying. Break revision into shorter, focused sessions with regular breaks to maintain concentration and minimise overwhelm.

* Adapt Revision Techniques to Individual Needs
For autistic children, establishing a predictable and consistent revision routine, along with incorporating sensory breaks, can help them regulate and prevent the build-up of pressure.

*Support Confidence and Motivation
Exams can put pressure on self-esteem, so nurturing your child's confidence can help them approach exams with a positive mindset. You can remind your child that effort matters more than results, and it’s important to celebrate every step forward. Encourage them to remember that exams are just one part of their journey, not the whole story, and that they have strengths and talents that go far beyond the exam room.

* Prepare Practically for Exam Day
Practical preparation and rehearsal can reduce anxiety, and a few simple steps can help make exam day feel calmer. Visiting the exam venue or room beforehand, if possible, can help your child feel more comfortable with the setting. Being organised with essentials such as pens, water, and snacks in advance also helps avoid last-minute stress. Rehearsing the morning routine can make the day feel predictable and smooth, setting a positive tone from the start.

In the SEND Parenting Podcast: "Supporting Stressed Teens" Dr. Naomi Fisher and Eliza Fricker explore how external pressure can worsen stress and hinder children’s ability to manage daily expectations and responsibilities. As they point out, "You can’t reduce someone’s anxiety by adding more pressure and anxiety."

For children who are struggling, particularly those finding it difficult to attend school, it's essential to offer support that helps them create a space where they can breathe, self-regulate, and reduce stress. This process is unique to each individual.

At London Autism Service, we believe that all children and teenagers can learn to understand their emotions and develop the tools they need to cope effectively with daily challenges.

Understanding demand avoidance is crucial for autism support, as it allows caregivers, educators, and therapists to adopt strategies that reduce stress and encourage cooperation.
Our team of clinical professionals here at London Autism Service provide systemic support by working closely with families, schools, and other caregivers to develop tailored strategies that reduce anxiety and increase participation.
Support often involves creating a more flexible, supportive environment, offering choices, and using positive reinforcement to help the child feel more in control and less anxious.
Through personalised interventions and ongoing communication, we empower individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition to develop coping strategies that help manage demand avoidance, while fostering a sense of accomplishment and engagement.

Today marks the beginning of Autism Acceptance Month and every day, let's celebrate the unique perspectives, talents, and strengths of those on the autism spectrum.

Autism is not something that needs to be "fixed"—it's a different way of experiencing the world, and that difference deserves respect, understanding, and care. Everyone on the spectrum is different, with their own personality and abilities, and that's what makes them incredible.

Here’s to creating a world where neurodiversity is celebrated, where every person is given the opportunity to shine, and where acceptance is the standard — not the exception.

Here at London Autism Service we work together. We are a team of multidisciplinary professionals who support children, adolescents and adults in a future where everyone, regardless of how they think, feel, or interact, can be fully seen, heard, and valued.

Here are 5 strategies to help nurture your authentic self and embrace neurodiversity:

1. Practice Self-Awareness 🧠 – Take time to understand how you experience the world, your sensory sensitivities, and your strengths. Self-awareness is key to navigating life with confidence.
2. Set Sensory and Emotional Boundaries ✋ – Recognise what triggers your sensory overload and emotional stress, and create boundaries to protect your well-being. It's okay to prioritise your needs.
3. Embrace Your Unique Traits 🌟 – Your differences are strengths! Whether it's your focus, attention to detail, or different way of thinking, embrace these qualities as part of what makes you, you.
4. Engage in Self-Discovery 🔍 – Explore activities and environments that feel authentic to you. Whether through special interests, hobbies, or creative outlets, self-discovery can be a powerful way to connect with your true self.
5. Surround Yourself with Understanding People 🌸 – Find those who respect your neurodiversity, offer support, and accept you for who you are. A positive, understanding community makes all the difference.

Remember, self-development is a journey unique to each person. Embrace your neurodiversity and continue to grow at your own pace.

At the London Autism Service we provide a clear diagnosis pathway, assessments and tailored post-diagnostic support.

Thank you for your support in 2024.

As an independent not for profit local business we thank you for trusting us to treat your family.

Please be aware that The Family Treatment Service, The Eating Disorder Service and the London Autism Service are closed over the holiday period from 19th December until we open again on 3rd January.

If in crisis you may need to consider attendance at your local A&E department where services provide 24 hour mental health assessment, or alternatively contact your GP for less urgent matters.

We hope you have a happy and peaceful festive season and look forward to seeing you again in 2025.

How can you manage your stress levels during the Christmas period?

Make a diary plan of what you think you can cope with doing and stick to it. If this is one social event a week, keep to that.

Practise saying ‘no’ to events that you know will drain your capacity to cope.
Plan activities that replenish your social energy throughout the festive season. This could look like watching a movie, practising yoga, or taking a bath. Self care will be vital to make sure you don’t burn out.

Think about your environment and how your senses respond. For example being around huge groups of people and loud music might feel exhausting whereas a one-on-one in a quiet cafe with a much-loved person, could be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.
