Why does the NHS only offer one round of IVF in some areas?
A revealing piece from The Guardian highlights how almost 70% of NHS areas in England provide only one cycle of IVF on the public health service. That’s a huge variation in access and support for people trying to build a family, and it raises important questions about equity, funding, and how decisions are made in our healthcare system.
Public funding gaps mean that in many regions, couples are limited to a single IVF cycle, which can be emotionally and financially exhausting if they don’t conceive right away. Regional differences mean access isn’t consistent across the country, leading to unequal chances for families depending on where they live.
If you or someone you know is going through infertility treatment, this impacts timelines, options and support. It also sparks a broader conversation about funding priorities in our NHS and how we measure success in reproductive health.
