🫤 Why do so many airport charging points stop performing over time?

Because they’re often treated like furniture.

⚡️ Installed once.
✔️ Box ticked.
❌ Then forgotten.

But charging in an airport isn’t static infrastructure.

Over time:
• Connectors wear out
• Cables get damaged
• Usage surges during delays or disruption
• Charging standards change
• Passenger expectations keep rising

➡️ Performance gradually drops.

In our research across 55 major international airports, nearly 90% scored lower on charging than on overall passenger satisfaction.

That isn’t a hardware issue.
It’s a service model issue.

Here’s a problem we see all the time 🤷🏽‍♂️

Most people don’t carry the right plug or adaptor.
And when they do, traditional plug sockets are slower, less reliable and harder to manage at scale.

That’s why modern charging infrastructure needs to prioritise:

• Speed – short dwell times need fast, reliable charging
• Simplicity – no dependence on personal adaptors
• Safety – low-voltage, tamper-resistant solutions
• Standardisation – fewer components, easier maintenance

USB-C and USB-PD are central to this shift.

The question isn’t IF public spaces need to move beyond plug sockets but rather… how quickly can they adapt?

The team are just back from a new installation!

A Chargebox FAST6 solution has been installed at Dewsbury Emergency Department, Dewsbury and District Hospital - Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust.

Now - patients, visitors and NHS staff with have access to reliable mobile charging when it’s needed most, often at stressful or critical times.

This installation was made possible thanks to funding from MY Hospitals Charity, whose continued support helps improve everyday experiences across many local healthcare settings.

Thank you also to Kathryn Box for her involvement in bringing this project together.
