The Parental Hierarchy of Needs

Just like children, parents have needs too.

But when we’re busy keeping everyone else fed, dressed, and organised, we often forget about our own basics.

For parents, the foundation usually starts with the essentials:

✨ Sleep – without rest, patience disappears quickly.
✨ Nourishment – eating properly fuels both our bodies and our moods.
✨ Support – parenting isn’t meant to be done alone.

But there are two needs that are often overlooked…

💛 Connection
💛 Joy

We can get so caught up in the jobs of parenting — school runs, dinner, laundry, routines — that we forget to simply enjoy being with our children.

One small thing that helps me is making a real effort to connect with my kids for just 10 minutes a day.

That means getting down to their level and doing whatever they want to do — playing, drawing, building, chatting.

It might only be 10 minutes, but those moments of connection can completely change the energy in your day.

And believe me… it really helps fill your cup too.

Follow for more honest conversations about parenting, burnout and finding balance.

I’m a parental burnout coach… and I still get overwhelmed.

Yep. Still.

Because parenting isn’t something you “fix” once and master forever — it’s something you move through, again and again.

Some days I’m calm, present, and patient.
Other days I’m touched-out, overstimulated, and counting down to bedtime.

And both are normal. 🤍

These 5 things aren’t about being perfect — they’re my anchors when things feel heavy. Small, doable ways I come back to myself so I can show up as the parent I want to be (most of the time 😉).

If you’re feeling stretched, snappy, or just tired to your bones… you are not alone.

✨ You don’t need to do more
✨ You don’t need to be better
✨ You just need support, space, and simple tools that actually work in real life

If this resonates, come join me here — I share honest parenting, nervous system support, and realistic ways to reduce the overwhelm.

Follow along if you’re ready to feel calmer, more in control, and less alone in motherhood 🤍

If this feels familiar…
You’re not “just bad at coping” 🤍
You might be experiencing parental burnout

And here’s something many people don’t realise…
It doesn’t just happen once

You can dip in and out of burnout
especially when you’re used to putting yourself last
and not getting the support you actually need

The truth is—when you’re in it, it’s really hard to see it
You normalise it
You push through
You tell yourself it’s “just a phase”

But your body and mind are telling a different story

So why not take a gentle first step…

I’ve created a 3-minute parental burnout quiz
to help you get a clear snapshot of how you’re really feeling

No pressure. Just awareness.

Comment QUIZ below and I’ll send it straight to you 💛

Reading this feels really sad… but for many parents it also feels very real.

As a single parent, I know how hard it can be to balance everything. Work, finances, parenting, the mental load of running a home.

For me, I try to get the “boring jobs” like cooking and cleaning done while my children are at school so that when I pick them up we have time for the fun stuff – talking, playing, laughing together.

But the reality is that when you’ve already worked all day, your energy levels are often depleted.

And that leads to an important question:

How do you connect with your children when you're exhausted?

Sometimes connection doesn’t have to be big or perfect.

It might be:
✨ ten minutes of playing together
✨ chatting about their day on the sofa
✨ reading a story
✨ sharing a laugh over something silly

Small moments of connection still matter.

Because even when life is busy, children remember how we made them feel.

I’d love to hear from other parents…
How do you stay connected with your kids when you’re tired?

The constant demands.

When our nervous system is overwhelmed, even small moments with our children can trigger big reactions.

At The Mindful Parent Hub, we help parents begin to notice and break that stress cycle.

In our sessions we combine:
✨ mindful art-therapy techniques to help parents slow down and express what they’re feeling
✨ CBT-based tools to understand thought patterns and emotional triggers
✨ gentle reflection and discussion with other parents who truly get it

The creative exercises aren’t about making perfect art.
They’re a mindful way to access emotions, release stress, and gain insight into what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Because when parents understand their own stress patterns, something powerful happens:

They gain the space to pause… and respond differently.

And that’s where real change in family life begins.

Have you noticed yourself feeling more snappy with your kids lately?

Maybe the smallest things suddenly feel overwhelming.
Maybe your patience feels thinner than it used to.

Before you judge yourself… pause for a moment.

Being more reactive doesn’t mean you’re failing as a parent.

Sometimes it’s a sign that your nervous system is overloaded.
Sometimes it’s burnout.
Sometimes it’s hormonal changes like PMS or perimenopause.
Sometimes it’s simply that you’ve been caring for everyone else for too long without support.

You are not alone in this ❤️

So many parents quietly carry this guilt while still showing up every day.

At The Mindful Parent Hub, we believe parents need care too.
A space to talk honestly, reset, and feel supported.

✨ If this resonates with you, tell me in the comments:
What drains your patience the most right now?

And if you’re a parent who wants more support, tools and honest conversations about parenting and wellbeing…

You deserve support just as much as your children do.

The key isn’t staying in green all the time (that’s impossible!) — it’s learning to notice the shift and having tools to help us move back to calm.

This is powerful for adults and for our children. When we understand the signals, we can respond with curiosity instead of reacting.

Which colour have you been in today? 🚦

Parenting rarely gives us a pause button.

The days are full.
The mental load is constant.
And somewhere between school runs, work, meals and bedtime… parents often disappear from the picture.

The Mindful Parent Hub was created to change that.

It’s a wellbeing space for parents to pause, reflect and reset — not because you’re failing, but because parenting is intense and none of us are meant to do it without support.

Inside the sessions we explore things like:
✨ understanding stress and the nervous system
✨ emotional regulation for parents and children
✨ breaking reactive patterns
✨ reconnecting with your values and needs
✨ creative reflection and supportive conversations with other parents

You don’t need to have everything figured out.
You just need somewhere that feels safe to slow down and be human for a moment.

Because when parents feel supported, families thrive.

Still feeling inspired after attending the International Women’s Day Festival at Soho Theatre Walthamstow. What an incredible afternoon of connection, conversation and community. From the powerful celeb headline panel to the later talks on women’s health, the motherhood penalty, violence against women, youth voices and poetry, it was a reminder of just how powerful it is when women come together to speak, share and build change.

So inspired listening to Andi Oliver, Juno Dawson, Helen Pankhurst, Ashley James, Shappi Khorsandi, Martha Deiros Collado and Låpsley — thank you for your honesty, courage and brilliance. 💛
