๐ King's surgeon receives special recognition
Dr. Irfan Malik, Consultant at King's, wins the Special Recognition award at this year's Zenithglobal health- Celebrating Excellence In Healthcare Awards, for his work in endoscopic spinal surgery.
After completing his neurosurgical training in Pakistan over 30 years ago, he carved out a successful career in spinal surgery.
In 2010, Mr Malik introduced endoscopic surgery to the UK, making him a pioneer in this highly-specialised, ultra-minimally invasive procedure, and has completed more endoscopic procedures than any other UK surgeon.
Prior to introducing the procedure, spinal surgery would take four times longer, and patients would experience longer hospital stays to recover. With the minimally invasive procedure, it lasts just one hour, and patients are able to walk out of the hospital pain-free just a few hours after the operation.
Mr Malik has also trained over 100 surgeons nationally and internationally, spreading his knowledge and helping to improve patient outcomes globally.
Receiving the award, Mr Malik said: "My goal is to make cutting-edge spine care accessible to as many people as possible, and to provide painless, effective solutions for spine problems, which allow patients to return to their lives without the ordeal of long recoveries."
Congratulations and well done, Mr Irfan.
