The Communication Tree 🗣🌳

This image illustrates how communication develops. Skills at the bottom (roots) are essential for developing the skills above (the trunk)!

The Roots
Like a tree we need strong communication roots to further develop our language. At the roots of communication are the fundamental skills required including shared attention, listening skills, play, interaction and turn taking.

The Trunk 🪵
At the trunk of the tree we have receptive language which is our ability to understand language. This includes our ability to understand vocabulary, questions and follow instructions.

The Branches
At the branches of the tree is expressive language who's is our ability to use language to convey messages. We might express our messages verbally (using words and sentences) or non verbally (using gestures, symbols, body language, facial expression etc.)

The Leaves 🍁
The final part of the communication tree to develop is our speech skills (how we pronounce words); our fluency skills (being able to communicate fluently reducing stammering) and our voice skills (using an appropriate tone, pitch, loudness etc)

Prepositions - in, out, beside, in front, behind, on top, off.

Following Directions – mix it up, pour the milk in, get the sugar, put it in the tin.

Requesting – turn on, more please, help please, I want to pour, all done.

Turn Taking – your turn to roll, my turn to mix, mammy/daddy’s turn to pour.
