One thing that really landed for me during the talk with at was how our nervous system is basically running a prediction game all day long.

It looks at everything from light to noise to screens to deadlines to training load and even how busy your mind feels then tries to decide what kind of state you need to be in.

If the signals look intense your body stays wired.
If the signals look safe your body can drop into recovery.

When those “intense” signals show up constantly that is where allostatic load builds.

It’s not one big stressor, it’s the drip feed or the accumulation of everyday stuff we stop noticing.

The good news:
Small recovery habits genuinely change the signals.
They tell your system you are safe enough to switch gear, to slow down, to repair and to actually feel well.

It is not about avoiding stress, it is about giving your body the right cues so it doesn’t have to stay on high alert.

Hands on touch is always part of the appointment. It is one of the simplest ways to help the body settle and the mind follow.

Did you know talks a lot about how the brain changes when it feels safe. Touch increases oxytocin, lowers cortisol and tells your nervous system that it can soften. That is why even the smallest stretch or adjustment can create a real sense of ease..

It is not just the muscles letting go, it is your brain doing the same.

Chronic pain is rarely about a structure that hasn’t healed.
More often, it’s the nervous system staying reactive long after the original issue has settled.

Stress, disrupted sleep, reduced capacity, and previous pain experiences all influence how sensitive the system becomes.
That’s why pain can feel intense even when scans or tests show nothing concerning.

The goal isn’t to “ignore” pain or push through it
it’s to understand what’s driving it, reduce sensitivity, and rebuild confidence in movement.

Targeted strength, consistent load, breath, and predictable patterns all help recalibrate the system so it responds more accurately again.

Clarity changes the experience. A calmer system changes the outcome.

Introducing the wonderful Harriet to the Flow Physio London team…

Harriet grew up in the Lake District, where days spent running, swimming and skiing in the mountains shaped her lifelong love of the outdoors and adventure. She studied Medical Physiology at the University of Manchester before completing a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy in Oxford, alongside a Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Soft Tissue and Remedial Sports Therapy.

Her career has taken her from the slopes of Verbier, where she spent two winter seasons caring for skiers and mountain enthusiasts alike, to London’s leading health clubs, where she guided clients as Clinical Lead Senior Physiotherapist. Along the way she has worked closely with professional athletes, supported major sporting events and developed a reputation for a calm, highly personal approach. A serious arm injury during her time in the Alps required complex surgery and rehabilitation, an experience that gave her rare empathy and a deep understanding of recovery.

Harriet is known for tailoring rehabilitation and performance programmes with discretion and precision, whether helping clients through post surgical recovery, managing long standing pain or returning to peak performance.

Away from the clinic, Harriet is drawn back to the mountains and the sea whenever she can. She runs, skis and surfs, and has taken on endurance challenges including Ironman Mallorca 70.3 and long distance trail races always seeking the next adventure.

We’re thrilled to have Harriet bring her expertise and energy to Flow Physio London.
