Optimum Movement

Optimum Movement • Biomechanics Optimisation
• Minimise and Eliminate Pain & Injury
• Maximise Tensional Integrity

27/07/2022

Spring 2020, with some sloppy Tensegrity and a lot of work to do, for a very imbalanced former pro cyclist.

Thankfully, I’ve made some marked progress with my biomechanics since then, and I’ll be showcasing some of the more basic dynamic work that I’m doing in my daily training, here, very soon.

I hope this will give you all some greater insight into how to apply simple but effective techniques to increase integration of your muscles and their respective myofascial slings.

There are 12 myofascial slings that connect every muscle in the musculoskeletal system, to work as a functioning and integral part of the single web and unit that is the human body.

Remember that it is one unit. Train accordingly.

All the best to for the Commonwealth Games representing the Isle of Man!

Will came down to London, from the Isle of Man, to do an intense 5 day block of Optimum Movement training, to enhance his biomechanics, as it relates to running, swimming and cycling. His results over 5 days were impressive, to put it mildly.

If you want to check out the results, see the Story Highlights on my profile page.

If you want to increase your running, swimming or cycling efficiency, start optimising each and every training session. DM 📲 me now and let’s get started. 🏃🏊‍♂️🚴🏻

Practice doesn’t make perfect. ❌ PERFECT practice makes perfect. ✅

One of the significant lessons I’ve learned since then, is how weak and imbalanced my body was and - albeit less so - still is, presently.

I really didn’t have much insight at all, back then, into the way the body can work efficiently with good integration, both off and on the bike.

Thankfully the last few years have been a steady journey of addressing issues that caused me repeated injuries, and plateaus in my training adaptation.

If you’d like to optimise your movement, training and performance, start off by looking at your biomechanics, fundamentally.

Don’t settle for mediocre.

Bec CC Hill Climb 2011

1 of only 2 races where I successfully defended a title from the previous season. Many a hill rep after school hours were done up the shortcut-side of Titsey Hill (if you know where I mean, you know!).

I wonder, how much a greater tensional integrity in my body, at 16 years old, would have made that 25% gradient on White Lane any easier…

Maybe one of these days, I should make a test on that lovely hill… for old time’s sake…

Simple but effective.

Get the T-spine strong and rotating well, and you’ll open the door to better movement.

St Martinusprijs Stage 2, UCI Junior 4-day, July 2012. Kontich, Belgium.

Somewhere in there were Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen, back when I could compete with the likes of those guys!

My first win at international level, at 17 years old (courtesy of Mr John Barclay and the team), just snatching it, after a long 130km rainy day, from the late Michael Goolaerts (rest in eternal peace).

Thank you to John Barclay, Dave, my parents , David Chapman, and all the people who helped me to achieve the little I did in the sport of cycling.

The lessons I learned, in perseverance and discipline, are still paying dividends.

You’ve heard of IQ and EQ. What is KQ?

Kinaesthetic Intelligence.

If you don’t understand the basis of the philosophy of your training, why are you committing to it?

Applying training to achieve truly good quality, efficient movement, is first about understanding how the body works, IN REALITY. In reality, as opposed to in a gym or a clinic.

Secondly, it is about learning how to apply efficiently, what you understand.

Some athletes incidentally can bypass (often by genetic pre-disposition) knowing the concepts that form efficient biomechanics, but unless you’ve never had an injury caused by repetitive strain or as a result of dysfunctional movement, you’ve suffered the consequence of not knowing how to move well.

I present a solution for one to do something about it, or otherwise settle for sub-optimal…

but I like to offer people the opportunity to choose optimal efficiency or not.

Spinal decompression?

This unintentionally-hidden concept, is a key component of biomechanical efficiency, of which most pro athletes, pro sport coaches and rehab professionals are implicitly ignorant, both in theory and practice. From industry experience both as an elite athlete and a specialist trainer, it is completely missed out, and not really mentioned at all.

If your vertebrae are to articulate well, in their relationship with the rest of the spine (and the rest of the body for that matter), it helps that they’re not compressed right down on top of one another, and potentially pinching discs, nerves and even the spinal cord itself.

If you haven’t worked on this until this point, NOW would be a good time to start.

You don’t only stand to gain better spinal dynamics, but better Tensional-integrity, posture and even improved inhalation efficiency whilst under load (all not to be discounted in their value).

If you’re not sure what this all means or how to apply it practically, feel free to drop me a message, either here on IG or via Whats App, through my profile page. I’d be happy to advise you from there.

Innovate or get dispatched.

Make efforts to understand the biomechanics of your patterns of movement, in training and out of training.

It may save you from surgery one day… Thankfully, despite all my cycling crashes, and various injuries, I’ve never had to go under the surgical knife. Deo gratias!

Although, had I not addressed my postural dysfunctions, I dare say I would’ve had to have surgery or ‘accept’ lifelong restrictions to my capacity to move.

There’s an ocean-wide disparity between the way even experienced world class athletes (withdrawing from competition with injury) currently train / ‘rehab/pre-hab’ and how it could be done.

I aim, daily, to be at the point of the spear, to slay the end of the old, dysfunctional methodologies and to lay the foundations for the new.

Innovate or get left behind. The choice is yours.
