Iyengar Yoga London has been welcoming yoga students and teachers since B.K.S. Located in Maida Vale, ten minutes from central London, our bright and spacious studios are open daily with classes for all levels from complete beginners to more advanced practitioners. As a charity, we run on a not-for-profit basis with a commitment to offering affordable yoga to students of all ages. Join us in the studio and online for classes with our exceptional team of experienced teachers.

We are pleased to present a rare opportunity to attend a Hybrid Workshop Special with Father Joe Pereira this May. This will be his first visit to Maida Vale, and we are honoured to host him

Father Joe founded the Kripa Foundation, the largest NGO in India devoted to the care, support and rehabilitation of those affected by chemical dependency and HIV & AIDS. Over a fifty-year period, Father Joe was deeply involved with B.K.S. Iyengar as a student, certified trainer and friend. Together they developed practices and protocols specifically for Kripa’s rehabilitation programme.

-About Father Joe’s Workshop
Firmly rooted within the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, Father Joe’s workshops extend one’s understanding of the spiritual dimension as he takes us on a journey from the outer body, in physiology and neurology, through to the subtle consciousness and towards what he refers to as the third dimension of the Antaratma or the soul consciousness.

Such teachings are rarely shared and very often lost in translation in the West. His work is profound yet entirely accessible to everyone, regardless of worldview or spiritual beliefs, yoga practitioner or not.

Father Joe will donate his workshop earnings to support his charitable foundation.

About Celia
Celia has been practising yoga since 1994. She gained her teaching certificate in 2004 and has made numerous trips to the institute in Pune, where she continues to be inspired. She has found the practice of Iyengar yoga a lifelong source of creativity and joy. She enjoys the philosophy that Iyengar yoga imparts and likes to share as much of this as possible in her classes, with humour and a continued shared exploration.

Celia also teaches a Studio Beginners class on Mondays from 6.15 - 7.30 PM.

Our centre was founded in 1984 to provide Iyengar students in London with a dedicated teaching centre. London’s original Iyengar yoga centre was financed by contributions and fundraising activities by its early members and by BKS Iyengar himself, who gave a talk and demonstration at the Barbican Centre to raise money for the new building project.

The original studio was formerly an artist’s studio and its members did a lot of the conversion work themselves. When B.K.S. Iyengar came to open the building, he lived there for a while. As students recall, it became his home away from home on visits to Britain. Over the next ten years plans were made to create a bigger and purpose-built studio. In 1994, the old studio was officially replaced by our current building which was inaugurated by Mr Iyengar in 1997.

Nigella Lawson, the recently announced new judge on The Great British Bake Off, has revealed that she prefers slower movement to anything intense, with Iyengar yoga her go-to practice. 🧘‍♀️🍰

Over the years, exercise has helped the 66-year-old maintain her health and wellbeing. 'I do yoga three times a week,' she told Good Housekeeping. 'I have to do something I enjoy, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. The older I get, the more I realise I have got to do lots of stretching. In particular, Nigella favours 'a rather slow form of yoga called Iyengar' that highlights precision and correct positioning when performing postures, often using props like blocks and belts as support. For her, fitness is as much about overall wellbeing as it is about physical results.
