Felix Pinto Baquerizo from the PACED team spent several hours with the palliative care home care team of the Firefly World children’s hospice in Tbilisi and composed an original piece about what palliative care entails beyond inpatient facilities—in people’s homes and everyday family life.
It's a story about work on the ground: home visits, clinical decision-making, attention to detail, and the challenges that only become visible once you are there. The piece brings together observations from a single day of the outreach service, along with short interviews with nurse Inga and driver Nikolai—people who accompany children and their families through the most vulnerable moments of their lives. We invite you to the second webinar in a series focused on palliative care associations. This session continues the professional dialogue between PACED and colleagues from Uganda, facilitated by PACED’s collaboration with Global Partners in Care.

The session features Mark-Donald Mwesiga, Executive Director of the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU), who will discuss how a strong professional community can drive systemic change even with limited resources.

PCAU has been instrumental in integrating palliative care into national health strategies. Uganda was the first African country to authorise nurses to prescribe morphine, significantly improving access to pain relief, especially in rural areas.

Mark will share their experience and highlight common mistakes that emerging professional communities should avoid. We are excited to share some significant news 🌟 PACED Foundation has received the Institutional Influencer Award within the COST Action CODE YAA - Palliative Care Education. The award recognises contributions to science communication and dissemination activities that drive changes in practices and attitudes towards palliative care. This year, 13 candidates were nominated.

The jury highlighted PACED’s work to improve palliative care education through international collaboration, culturally appropriate training programmes, digital formats, and advocacy. They acknowledged our work across Central Asia, Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and the Baltic states as contributing to a shift in how palliative care is perceived—from an ‘optional add-on’ to a fundamental human right.

For us, this award is not only a recognition but also confirmation that clear, ethical, and inclusive communication about palliative care genuinely matters and can instigate lasting change.

We would also like to congratulate the recipient of the Individual Influencer Award, Diana Nabunje Lubega (Uganda), for her outstanding work within the mPallCare initiative. We thank CODE YAA - Palliative Care Education for their trust and support 💙

We spoke with Odontuya Davaasuren, a key figure in Mongolia's palliative care history. A physician and educator, professor Odontuya has spent more than 25 years consistently working to ensure that palliative care in the country becomes part of the healthcare system rather than a charitable exception.

🔹 On 5 February, PACED will launch a new webinar series focused on spiritual support for children. The first session will be led by Joan Marston, a global leader in children’s palliative care, co-founder of ICPCN, experienced in spiritual care and the development of palliative care in humanitarian crisis settings. We will examine how children experience illness and suffering, and articulate existential questions. We’ll discuss the differences between spiritual, psychological, and religious support, and consider potential forms of care.

In the rhythm of daily work, it is difficult to find time to pause, look back, reflect on the journey so far, and—based on those reflections—consider the future. This is precisely why, on 12 December, PACED held a roundtable discussion to review the past year and plan for the next. The meeting united members of the PACED team and palliative care leaders from seven countries: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, and Romania.

🔹 The discussion highlighted very different national contexts—from regions where palliative care is just beginning to develop within public healthcare systems to countries with many years of experience. Despite these differences, the main themes were consistent across all settings: people, knowledge, sustainable funding, and care delivered as close to home as possible.

В повседневной работе редко удаётся найти момент, чтобы оглянуться и проанализировать пройденный путь и, опираясь на выводы, подумать о будущем. Именно для этого 12 декабря PACED провёл круглый стол, посвящённый итогам прошедшего года и планам на следующий. Во встрече приняли участие представители команды PACED, а также лидеры паллиативной помощи из семи стран: Узбекистана, Казахстана, Грузии, Армении, Кыргызстана, Латвии и Румынии.
