Beans are incredibly versatile and can be used in various meals. Some options include salads, soup, casseroles, tacos, plant-based burgers, and there are so many more to enjoy.

Beans an excellent source of fibre, and studies have shown that consuming them can reduce constipation, they help reduce cholesterol levels, and many other health benefits.

Alongside health benefits, beans can be relatively cheap and have a long shelf life 🙌

For a light lunch, make a simple and delicious kidney bean salad recipe.

All you need is:
➜A can of kidney beans (drain and rinse)
➜2 stalks of celery, sliced
➜A handful of cherry tomatoes
➜1 pack of diced baby cucumbers
➜A handful of chopped parsley (or dried parsley)
➜1/2 red onion, sliced
➜Season with sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste

Prepare with your dressing of choice! We recommend trying a mix of extra virgin olive oil, pumpkin seed oil and lemon juice, but this is entirely to taste!

21st of June (also known as Summer Solstice) is the longest day of the year; the day we get the most amount of sunlight possible in the Northern Hemisphere. So why is this a significant day?

The answer is simple: the importance of sunlight🌞

Research shows that sunlight is the most important factor responsible for the replenishment of vitamin D pools. We should aim for approximately 5 - 30 minutes of sunlight exposure between 10am - 2pm as during this time there is more UVB radiation, which stimulates human skin to produce vitamin D. After 2pm the amount of UVA radiation in sunrays increases, and that is damaging to the skin.

In addition, researchers have found that direct sunlight exposure has numerous beneficial effects on our physical and mental health through synthesis of vitamin D. For example, it improves the immune function, it regulates the inflammatory response, it influences the sleep cycle by influencing the secretion of melatonin (a hormone critical for regulating the sleep-wake cycle) and it also influence the production of serotonin a neurotransmitter that elevates mood. Therefore, it is no wonder that even moderate sunlight exposure can positively affect how we feel.

Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach, focusing on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.

Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms and it focuses on addressing the root causes of the disease.

At BCNH, we adapted this approach to our own model, teaching students how to apply Functional Medicine principles based on comprehensive Health Programme Questionnaire and the latest scientific evidence in the field of nutrition.

The Functional Medicine Tree is a diagram that helps communicate the key principles of Functional Medicine, from the root causes to health consequences.

Although the principal feature of vegetarian diets is the absence of animal products, some vegetarian diets do include some forms of animal flesh. Subtypes of vegetarianism include:
(1) pesco‐vegetarians - omit all animal products but eat fish;
(2) lacto‐ovo‐vegetarians - omit all animal products but include eggs and dairy products;
(3) lacto‐vegetarians - omit all animal products but eat dairy products;
(4) ovo‐vegetarians - omits all animal products but eat eggs; and
(5) vegans - omit all animal products including honey.

The common underlying practice amongst them all is the avoidance of consuming red meat, which may be responsible for numerous health benefits. A well-planned vegetarian diet can provide adequate amounts of all critical nutrients.

However, a vegetarian diet that is not well-balanced, can contribute to several nutrient deficiencies including lack of omega-3 essential fatty acids, lack of protein, lack of minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc and iodine, and vitamin deficiencies such as vitamin D and B12. These nutrients are particularly important for children’s growth and development.

☀️May 2023 is ☀️

As we approach the warmer months, it is important to protect our skin from the sun.

Research shows that excessive sun exposure or high acute doses of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation promote cutaneous inflammation and genetic mutations, both of which can ultimately contribute to skin carcinogenesis.

According to Cancer Research UK, “the best way to enjoy the sun safely and protect your skin is to use shade, clothing and sunscreen.”

In addition, examine your skin regularly to see if there is anything new, unusual, or changing, and if you do notice anything, get it checked with a dermatologist. 🔎
