Because let’s be realistic. No one can be “positive f*ing vibes only” at all times.

• BUT we can change our narrative around birth in the run up to our own birth.

• We can work to dispel the notion that birth is something to be afraid of.

• And we can NO THANK YOU to the naysayers that rush to tell us their horror stories.

Imagine you are preparing for the most important job interview or race of your life. There will of course be moments of anxiety and wobbles and it would be madness to think otherwise. BUT you will spend the majority of your time preparing, planning and visualising a positive outcome. People will tell you you are more than equipped and prepared for the job. Approach your birth in the same way and surround yourself with those people.

• Positive vibes sometimes people 🖤

WILDFLOWERS: Added some seeds to the wildflower patch at the bottom of the allotment this morning. It’s a mixture of what we had lying around at home and have been sprinkled rather sporadically but always exciting to see what appears! 🐝 🌸🌻

KALE: who even am I posting about Kale?? Only kidding... I eat mine friend in butter and lots of garlic! But that doesn’t mean I’m not loving the challenge of growing it. Having more time to spend at the allotment has been one of the biggest silver linings of the lockdown. We’re super lucky it’s opposite our house and is on the government’s list of allowed daily exercise. The to do list does seem to keep getting longer though... 🤦‍♀️

ALLOTMENT PLANNING: Having a cup of tea and a brownie kindly gifted by our totally wonderful neighbour while doing a spot of allotment planning for the weekend. Going to finish the pea frame and hope to get started on the wildflower patch. Will try and pop up some pics of what we’ve got on the go atm as I like to look back and see how far they’ve come (or not! 🤦‍♀️)

WISTERIA HYSTERIA: Brightening up opening my front door to collect the milk right now!! 💜

Happy Easter from my fam to yours. It might not be with everyone we wanted it to be with this year but we made the most of it with sunshine, allotment pottering, roast lamb, all the chocolate and all the wine!! Thinking especially of everyone working hard to keep the country safe and running at the moment and their families 💜

HOME BIRTH IN HOSPITAL:
Many home birth teams are having to suspend their services at the moment as the ambulance services they rely on are too stretched to be able to safely support them.

This means many mums are having to rethink and pivot their birth plans, but with a bit of tweaking and prep can optimise their birth environment in hospital.

At any birth, the aim of the game is to keep adrenaline at bay and encourage the production of oxytocin (our birthing and bonding hormone) and endorphins (our natural pain relief hormones).

For a birth on the labour ward (planned or not) think about the following things to keep down your adrenaline:

⭐️ Breathing. Slow down your breath, particularly your exhale, and your brain stress receptors switch off. It gives your body time to produce oxytocin during the exhale and it allows your blood to become oxygenated and support your uterus muscles and your baby’s placenta.

⭐️ Think about your environment and what you can control. Calm music or relaxation tracks can be played on your headphone or portable speaker. The lighting in the room can de turned off or dimmed and you can bring battery powered tea lights and candles to pop around the room. Think about ways you can make the smell of your room more homely. Pack a relaxing room spray, and a few drops of lavender oil on a cold flannel placed on your forehead/ back of your neck can be transformative. It’s also worth bringing a pillow and pillowcase from home. Hospital pillows tend to be flat as a pancake and it will look and feel like home.

⭐️ Guided relaxations and visualisations. Use these as and when you need them to focus and help put yourself in a positive head space.

⭐️ All the snacks!! Hospital cafes may be closed/ operating on reduced hours at the moment so don’t forget to pack a selection of high energy/ slow release snacks and plenty of fluids (water, coconut water and Lucozade Sport are all fab).

📖 On a hypnobirthing course you will learn all about the above, what options are available to you and what choices you want to think about in advance. As always, knowledge is power 👊
