Lovely feedback from a family I had the privilege of supporting these past few months.

I’m so grateful for every family that choose me to support them as their postnatal doula. I’ll never take for granted the absolute priviledge it is to be able to do this work.

Some lovely words from a family I saw for our last visit last week. I say last visit rather than finished supporting because once I’m your doula, I’m always your doula and I make sure that you know that you can reach out weeks, months or even years later if you need support.

If you’re looking for a doula for life, I’ve got one space left for a new client this side of the year or from February 2025 onward.

So I’m interested to know, when I say the words ‘postnatal period’, what words come to mind? Is it positive, or not so much?

This I will continue to the cultural narrative that expects new mothers to bounce back and just ‘get on with it’.

I will continue to work to change the culture around postpartum so that mothers have the support they need as they make the most monumental of transitions into motherhood.

I choose this challenge because we deserve this for ourselves, for our sisters, for our daughters and for all the mothers that come after us💕

✨How are you feeling about your postpartum body?✨

This from resonates so much.

It can feel like a bit of an out of body experience living your postpartum body.

Not pregnant, but still looking like you are. Feeling soft and tender and vulnerable. Maybe feeling like your body is not your own, but belongs to your baby if you’re breastfeeding. Not fitting into your old clothes but not wanting to wear your maternity clothes. Wondering if you’ll ever be able to run as fast or as far as you used to.

I’ve definitely felt all these things and when I’ve felt myself wishing for my old body I remind myself that ✨I grew and birthed two freaking humans✨ Now that is ✨MAGIC✨

The next reason in the series is all about postnatal planning!

Whether it’s one to one planning sessions with my doula clients or training other birth workers on how to do this work through my Postnatal Planning workshops, this is a big part of the work that I do!

4: To Plan Your Postnatal Period

Most pregnant people make some kind of birthing plan (preferences/choices) but have you thought about a postnatal plan?

The truth is that you will have more control over your postnatal plan than your birth plan, so it’s really important to think about. And by planning you can start to think how you might avoid panic or issues when situations are not going the way you hoped.

During a pandemic, this is even more important when services change, are restricted or are not offered in person. Having restricted times for visitors in hospital postnatal wards means that if you have plans, you can rely less on partners and relatives and prepare yourself with what you might need.

Postnatal planning can help you think about putting practical support in place, what you might need to keep life going, how you might feel after birth, how you might recover physically and how you can prepare for the arrival of your baby.

Support and preparation for birthing is important but the postpartum period is a long stretch so thinking about it is not something to be brushed under the carpet.

Particularly not during a pandemic with less resources around. And why not make it feel more positive instead of an endurance test?

I have had 3 postnatal planning sessions with one family I am supporting because they knew that this was invaluable. And hosts postnatal planning workshops for professionals. Link in bio. Postnatal doulas will have template plans they can work through with you. And give you extra tips, ideas and options.

So get planning for new parenthood in this pandemic with your postnatal doula and don’t let it rob you of what can be a joyous journey with your baby.

Some feedback from the most recent workshop:
''I have just completed the Postnatal Planning Workshop with Sarah. I have been working with parents and expectant parents for over 10 years both as an NCT teacher and a hypnobirthing teacher with the Little Birth Company. I learned so much which will positively impact my practice. Sarah is fantastic, knowledgeable, so warm and engaging and the workshop itself was thought provoking. I would recommend this workshop to anyone working in the birth world!’

I (and my clients) breathed a massive sigh of relief when it was confirmed that postnatal doulas could continue to offer in home support during the current lockdown.

It won’t be for everyone, which is where virtual support can be great, but it’s so important that parents have access to the option of in home support if they want and need it.

Posted • And my list of 10 reasons to have a postnatal doula in a pandemic continues today with:

3: When you need flexible and safe support

Postnatal doulas can still offer face to face support in your home. They are keeping on top of the latest government guidelines and talking with parents about safety precautions which can be agreed mutually.

Wearing face masks, PPE, regularly washing hands, keeping a window open, changing clothes, being aware of symptoms and looking at your own risk factors/situations are all elements of your mutual agreement that can be considered.

Many PN doulas including myself are supporting in home as safely as possible. It’s important to note that the continuation of breastfeeding can mean that those feeding and babies can produce antibodies to protect against Covid if contracted.

And if support is needed or preferred remotely, then this can be really valuable. PN doulas can use all the tech that’s out there and offer sessions on platforms such as Zoom. Phone calls, texts and messages can provide reassurance for quicker or longer check ins. And remote support can provide flexibility on times when support can be accessed, agreed with your doula - stressful evenings and middle of the night panics can be diffused if you agree contact with your doula during those times.

I have been supporting parents with huge benefit remotely and during the ‘witching’ hours.

So reach out and make the most of the flexible options PN doulas can offer you. And keep talking to your doula knowing you are in safe hands (virtual ones too)!

While this looks like just an average picture of a lasagna and a gnocchi and cauliflower pasta bake, they actually represent a pretty big doula milestone for me.

Last week, I ended 2020 with my first doula visit to my first repeat doula client. Two years ago it was our ritual that I’d always make a lasagna as part of a visit. New year’s eve I was back making lasagna as well as the pasta bake for a new big sister.

It’s such a privilege to be chosen by a family to support them as their doula but there’s something extra special about being invited back when they become parents again!
