Looking after your joints and staying well this January
It is wonderful to get out and about in Walthamstow, enjoying brisk winter walks or preparing your gardens for the season ahead. However, we know that the damp and cold weather can sometimes make your joints feel a little stiffer than usual.
At Ashlins, we believe that staying active is the key to a happy retirement, but it is just as important to rest and repair. If you are finding it a little harder to get moving on these frosty mornings, here are a few gentle reminders to help you stay comfortable this winter:
Top up your Vitamin D During these darker months, it is difficult to get enough Vitamin D from sunshine alone. The NHS recommends a daily supplement for everyone during the winter. It is vital for keeping our bones and muscles strong, helping us stay independent and mobile.
Warmth from the inside out Drinking enough water helps keep our joints lubricated and our skin healthy. If a cold glass of water doesn't appeal, try homemade soups or herbal teas. It’s a lovely way to nourish yourself and stay warm after a long walk.
Respect your limits Whether you are tackling a big project in the garden or looking after the family, remember to pace yourself. It is perfectly fine to take regular breaks. Listen to your body—if you feel a "ni**le" or stiffness setting in, take a short rest.
Soothe the stiffness Sometimes, a hot bath isn't quite enough to ease that deep-set winter tension. Massage is a wonderful way to improve circulation, ease stiffness in the back and shoulders, and help you move more freely.
Our clinic on Walthamstow’s Hoe Street has been a part of the community for years, offering a warm, safe, and welcoming space to relax. Our therapists are experts at providing gentle, effective treatments tailored to your needs—perfect for helping you get back to doing the things you love.
