What does good orthopaedic training actually look like?

High-quality orthopaedic surgical training is essential for developing a safe consultant workforce — yet what counts as “good” training in everyday theatre and clinic practice varies hugely between units.

We’re running a study to better define practical, measurable features of high-quality training and we want to hear from both trainees and trainers.

We’re especially interested in specific, real-world components

Stage 1 aims to generate a comprehensive longlist of components of high-quality training for higher orthopaedic trainees (ST3–ST8). All responses will be anonymised and grouped during analysis.

⏱️ The survey takes ~5 minutes to complete.

We’re delighted to share that our President, Meg Baker, has been selected as the new Resident Co-Chair of the International Conference of Residency Education, to be held in Canada.

Meg will be involved in all aspects of the conference, from the build-up through to the event itself. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to medical education on an international scale, share ideas, and gain valuable insight into how different systems are addressing training challenges.

A huge congratulations to Meg on this well-deserved achievement!

There is deep sadness across the entire BOTA community at the passing of Oliver Adebayo.

A former BOTA President, Oliver stepped into the role at a time when the world and our workforce were facing profound uncertainty during the global pandemic. He did so with quiet strength and unwavering commitment.

Oliver was an unassuming leader who led with generosity, humility, and joy. Even towards the end, he continued to support BOTA and was always eager to help in any way he could.

This is a significant loss not only to the world of orthopaedics, but to the many people who knew, respected, and loved him.

Our love and heartfelt support go out to all his family and friends, especially his wonderful wife Bernadine and beautiful son Elijah.

We will honour Oliver through the work we continue to do at BOTA and look forward to celebrating his life and legacy at a later date. In the meantime, a page has been set up to raise funds in support of his family:

To our members,

We wanted to make you aware that this afternoon we expressed our frustrations on your behalf regarding the delay in the FRCS Part 1 results. This situation is unacceptable and not how our trainees deserve to be treated. While several suggestions have been made for managing the situation, we feel these are not sufficient for our trainees. We have therefore requested clear answers and further explanation from the relevant bodies.
We fully appreciate the stress and anxiety this delay has caused, and we will continue to do everything we can to support you.
