Hardly imaginable but two of the same Lords who were defeated at the end of last year are having another try at retrospectively changing the law to remove rights of the public to consultation on disposal of public land - disproportionately benefiting AELTC - meaning that the court hearing in January to establish whether a Public Trust of Wimbledon Park exists and for which judgment is awaited - is irrelevant.

The audacity is really quite remarkable - unbelievable even - but reflects the desperation the private members’ club has to avoid genuinely consulting with the community and finding a way forward together (see You Gov story here too …).

Sound the alarm - if such a blatant abuse of power makes it through, what else is right behind? And will it be your green space next?

“Wimbledon Tennis Club is back in court over their park land grab. The setup? A global sporting institution with deep pockets vs. local residents armed with statutory trusts, covenants, and stubborn optimism.

30 years ago, the Club bought part of the park and promised never to build on it. Turns out that was more of a vibe than a commitment.

There’s a trust protecting the land? “Never heard of it,” says the Club. And when that trust became legally inconvenient, an amendment mysteriously appeared in the Lords (spoiler: it failed) to retroactively make it irrelevant. Coincidence, surely.

A covenant explicitly forbidding development? They’re betting Merton Labour won’t enforce it.

Last July’s High Court ruling? The judge decided planning permission doesn’t require checking if building is actually... legal. Appeal pending.

The stakes extend far beyond Wimbledon: how do we protect Metropolitan Open Land when economic power meets legal inconvenience?
