Our Nutritionist and Medical Herbalist at The Vale Practice, Marion, recommends this simple gut-healing breakfast during an IBS flare-up. Have a read below: 🌿
Porridge made with oats and a plant milk of your choice topped with stewed apples and a sprinkle of cinnamon plus a cup of fresh ginger tea. This is a simple gut-healing breakfast which I may recommend to my clients during an IBS flare up.
Oats contain beta-glucans, prebiotic fibre and antioxidants which helps to reduce inflammation, support healthy bowel movements, heal the gut lining and feed the gut microbiome.
Stewed apples contain pectin, a fibre which helps to heal the gut lining and helps to support healthy bowel movements - both for diarrhoea and constipation which can both be features of an IBS flare.
Cinnamon is a nice add-on that has anti-inflammatory and blood sugar regulating properties.
A fresh ginger infusion can help to reduce IBS symptoms of cramping, bloating and nausea and can further help to support normal bowel movements.
Once the gut has settled and the flare up calmed down I suggest adding a source of protein and more fibre to make your porridge more nutrient-dense.
