Yes! Thank you ! I am on a MISSION to explore the art of Japanese living – to be found right here in the UK.

When I left Japan after 3 years of teaching on the JET Programme, I thought my love affair with Japan was over. 😢

But back in the UK, I found I was madly keen to make sense of my Japan experience and keep a tight hold of it!

It was all a bit of a strain. Until I realised something deceptively simple : I didn’t want to JUST LEARN Japanese – I wanted to actually LIVE IT! I chose to live in London, but I was choosing NOT to leave Japan behind.

That’s when I started JapaneseLondon.com.

Since then, I have learnt so much more about Japan! In my ‘the Way to Japan’ podcast I talk with Japan-inspired creatives, entrepreneurs & business people about WHAT they do, WHY they do it, and what WE CAN LEARN from their unique ‘way to Japan’.

I LOVE uncovering those small, significant details, words of wisdom to live by & really practical tips to get us closer to Japan in our daily lives…

So if you, like me, are one of those people with a Japan-shaped hole in your heart, tune in and capture your own little piece of Japan joy today! ♡

💕I absolutely LOVE matching learners of Japanese with their very own private 1-1 native speaking Japanese language tutor!

I honestly believe 1-1 tuition with a wonderful tutor is the best, most effective way to meet your learning goals.

There are sooooo many reasons why!

1️⃣Fed up of group lessons? Want to be able to actually SPEAK the language?

It’s much more practical to practise direct, tailored conversation with an individual (rather than in a group lesson with lots of other non-Japanese speaking classmates!).

2️⃣Preparing for a test, such as the JLPT or Japanese GCSE?

You don’t need to feel alone. Your tutor can work with you to keep your studies on track.

3️⃣Travelling to Japan soon?

Your native Japanese tutor can teach you interesting cultural points and subtle nuances of etiquette specific to your own situation.

BUT we found it was really difficult to match them with a tutor logistically: that is, to get the right tutor to the right place, and the right time, for a shorter lesson (young learners ofter prefer a lesson of 30 mins, 45 mins or an hour)...

Unfortunately, I often wasn’t able to help arrange in person lessons for kids of only 30 minutes - it just doesn't work logistically. But since there has been a shift to more online lessons, all that has changed! We now have lots of young learners of Japanese.

And the Good News is: 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲, and our professional & dedicated Japanese tutors have really risen to the challenge of online teaching.

🌖 It’s that fairy light-lit time of year when books really come into their own!
Well-chosen books are always my most appreciated gift & settling down on a dark afternoon with a hot cup of tea & cosy read is SUPER appealing... what ‘to do’ list?

🌚’In Praise of Shadows’ by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki fits the ‘cosy read’ bill perfectly. Published in 1933, this evocative long essay focuses on the vanishing aesthetics of dark, glossy, mysterious Japanese interiors. Just the thing to read by candlelight!

🌒I took this photo in the Barbican; such an atmospheric building which is so full of bright lights and shadowy nooks. I adore spending a few precious hours reading there...

Have you read any books you’d recommend over the holidays so far?!
