In this talk, Dr. Kate Liu examines the lasting effects of untreated postnatal depression. While SSRIs are commonly recommended for moderate to severe postnatal depression, concerns about their long-term safety in children create hesitations in treatment.

To address this, she presents a study tracking over 60,000 mother-child pairs in Norway, investigating the impact of postnatal SSRI use on children’s emotional, behavioral, motor, and language development over the first five years of life. https://bit.ly/4q7Gq4a

"Trauma-informed care often overlooks neurodivergence, leading to missed diagnoses and support, as in James’ story. Research shows trauma, neurodevelopmental conditions and adversity frequently co-occur, with “double jeopardy” when both are present. Services must move beyond silos to holistic, person-centred assessment that recognises each child’s unique “make and model.”"

Read the full blog by Professor Helen Minnis and Dr. Ruchika Gajwani to explore what happens when trauma-informed care misses neurodivergent children.

What’s in a label? This episode asks whether diagnostic labels within education — autism, ADHD, dyslexia — help or hinder inclusion.

Dr Jane Gilmour and Professor Umar Toseeb unpack the balance between clarity and complexity: do labels open doors to support, or reduce young people to categories?

💭 A must-listen for educators, clinicians, and families rethinking what truly supports neurodiverse learners. https://bit.ly/4oEF93y

In this talk, Dr. Brañas presents compelling data showing that between 11% and 22% of adolescents in outpatient mental health clinics, and 33% to 49% in inpatient units, meet the criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD). Despite its prevalence and associated social and economic burdens, BPD is underdiagnosed, and mental health professionals often lack adequate training in its management among adolescents.

Watch now to examine the structure of Good Psychiatric Management for Adolescents (GPM-A) with BPD and its role in a stepped-care treatment framework. https://bit.ly/4oVQ09m

People often wonder why it is that some children fare better in the face of adversity than others and ask what we can do to promote resilience in high-risk children. This talk considers what we mean by resilience, provides a brief overview of the types of protective factors that might be important, and then provides an example from our own research on resilience in young people who have a parent with depression.

Watch now to improve your understanding that children differ in how they respond to adversity. https://bit.ly/4idkfa3

Does it really matter which type of therapy you choose?

In this Mind the Kids episode, hosts Dr. Jane Gilmour and Prof. Umar Toseeb sit down with Professor Ian Goodyer from the University of Cambridge to unpack one of the most provocative findings in youth mental health research: different types of psychotherapy for adolescent depression work equally well—but not for the reasons we thought.

Perfect for: Clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, researchers, students, and anyone interested in what really works in mental health treatment—and why. https://bit.ly/4qKNEMY
