St Joseph's Hospice

St Joseph's Hospice St Joseph's Hospice helps people in East London to live life to the full, to the very end. 💙

We have been enhancing lives, easing pain and bringing comfort and understanding for over a hundred years. Nothing can soften the blow of learning that you have been diagnosed with an illness which cannot be cured and will bring an end to your life. But at St Joseph’s Hospice we help our patients and those closest to them, to cope with the anxiety and challenges which may arise. St Joseph’s broad range of services enriches the lives of patients and their families from the diverse communities of east and north-east London. St Joseph’s is available to all those who can benefit from it; we work to meet all the needs of our patients, including those which reflect their ethnic, cultural or religious heritage. The care and treatment available at St Joseph’s helps patients live as actively as possible for as long as possible. It also supports the whole person, offering practical, emotional and spiritual help in addition to the medical care. The Day Hospice, social work team, chaplaincy, bereavement and children’s bereavement services all work to meet the needs of those with cancer and other life limiting illnesses as well as those of their families and carers. Most people with a serious illness prefer to remain at home if they can. Our Community Palliative Care Team works alongside other professionals, so that wherever possible, people needing palliative care can be cared for in their own homes.

With less than 3 months to go until the TCS London Marathon 2026, we welcomed some of this year's amazing to a special brunch here at the Hospice 💙

Each runner has their own personal reason for supporting St Joseph’s, and it was so powerful to bring them all together. We were also joined by our wonderful friends from LDN PHYSIO with specialist sports physiotherapist Nic sharing top tips and advice to get our runners race-ready.

So far, the team has raised a whopping £18,000 towards our care - and we can't wait to cheer them on this April! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Today we marked Ash Wednesday in our St Joseph’s Hospice Chapel with Mass and the distribution of ashes.

Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of the season of Lent - an important and sacred time for Catholics and Christians around the world.

Lent is a 40 day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting and reflection, ending with the celebration of Easter Sunday. The 40 days recall Christ’s time in the wilderness, where he fasted and was tempted.

As we begin this season together, we wish everyone observing Lent a peaceful and reflective period ahead 💙

Every day, we see the difference kindness makes. 🧡

Last year, thousands of patients and families across East London received care and comfort - all made possible by the support of our community.

To say thank you, our team wanted to share this short message. 🫶

This is Hospice Care 💛

For the second year, we're standing with hospices across England, Scotland and Wales to secure the future of hospice care.

Gifts in Wills help to fund care for 1 in 7 of our patients - bringing comfort, compassion and dignity when it matters most.

The Most Reverend Richard Moth has been appointed as the 12th Archbishop of Westminster, succeeding Cardinal Vincent Nichols. His installation as Archbishop took place during a Mass at Westminster Cathedral on 14th February 2026.

Paddy McGuinness, Chair of Trustees at St Joseph’s Hospice, said, “We at St Joseph’s congratulate Richard Moth on his inauguration as 12th Archbishop of Westminster. As a dependent body of the Diocese we look to his leadership and are heartened by his expressed dedication to social teaching as we strive to expand our reach and deepen the impact of our care for those in need across East London. We also thank Cardinal Vincent for his patronage of the Hospice and his inspiring engagement here and wish him well in what comes next.”

"I love my job. I care about every patient who comes in. You meet so many different people, and it can be a humbling experience. The wards are warm places too, and we have a laugh!" - Dolores

In the latest issue of our Life Magazine, we catch up with our Ward Clerks, Kelly and Dolores, to hear about what a typical day looks like on St Joseph's wards and what they love most about their roles 😊💙

Are you an unpaid carer looking after someone with a life-limiting condition? Our Carer Social Club is a welcoming peer support group where you can connect with others with similar experiences 🤝

The Carer Social Club meets at St Joseph’s Hospice on the second Thursday of each month from 1pm-3pm. Alongside time to socialise, you’ll have access to free training and support in caring for someone with a palliative condition, led by our specialist clinical staff 💬

Our next meeting is tomorrow, Thursday 12th February, and includes a Carer Self-Care Workshop facilitated by a St Joseph’s Hospice Trainee Clinical Psychologist.

You can attend if you are 18 or over and live in, or care for someone who lives in, Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Newham, and the person you care for has a life-limiting or progressive condition, is receiving palliative care, or has moderate to advanced dementia.

Today we held a remembrance service in our Garden Room to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, an annual event on 27th January for the world to remember the Holocaust and its victims.

This year’s theme is ‘Bridging Generations’. This is a call to action, a reminder that the responsibility of remembrance does not end with the Holocaust survivors - it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us 🕯️
