Here’s another lovely video from Balanced Minds’ director Dr Charlie Heriot-Maitland, in collaboration with Kings College London. The video outlines how compassion - and more broadly Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) - can help people who are hearing unpleasant voices. This video has been watched by over 185,000 people, and has been great help to many in reducing shame and building a sense of hope that change can happen through therapy and by learning how to be more compassionate with yourself.

The video is voiced by the inspirational Dr Eleanor Longden and Dr Rufus May.

We’ve been busy at Men’s Minds Matter developing this coping with COVID psychological survival guide.

How to cope in a crisis. Based on our model for crisis intervention. Also, not just for men. How to manage emotional upset and buffer against depression.

We’re delighted to bring you our new coping with COVID survival guide.

We’ve been busy taking our model for working with people in suicidal crisis so that it can be helpful for both men and women struggling psychologically with this Coronavirus business.

We hope that you find it helpful.

It’s so hard finding a psychological therapist as many professions remain unregulated.

The only titles protected by law:

Clinical Psychologist (DClinPsy)

Counselling Psychologist (DPsych)

Both are clinical doctoral-level training denoted by the abbreviations above (Please note a PhD is a research degree NOT a therapy qualification).

The governing body for both professions is the HCPC. Both professions are considered Practitioner Psychologists and are often trained in a range of different therapy approaches. You can check if your clinical or counselling psychologist is registered here.

https://www.hcpc-uk.org/public/be-sure-check-the-register/

You can also find clinical psychologists by searching the British Psychological Societies directory of chartered psychologists:

https://www.bps.org.uk/lists/DIR

If you’re looking for other types of therapists - psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, counsellors or CBT therapists please do your background research. The training, experience and quality can range from zero to very competent.

Therapists from other orientations should at the very least be registered with a professional body. Either the BABCP, UKCP, BACP or the BCP. If they are not, don’t go near them. You can check if your therapist is registered at the links below:

https://www.bacp.co.uk/

https://www.babcp.com/Default.aspx

https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/

https://www.bpc.org.uk/find-a-therapist

If you're looking in this direction, research which type of approach might work best for you. If you’re looking for something exploratory, non-directive, childhood focused and open-ended you’re leaning towards psychodynamic approaches. If you’re looking for something time-limited, here-and-now focused, directive, practical and skills-based it’s CBT.

We would advise that you avoid any referring agencies unless they are linked with one of the governing bodies above.

We hope this helps you in your search.

Meditation is skill set which has scientific backing for its usefulness for wellbeing. If you’re not spiritual you can come to it from a scientific perspective.

Here’s an in depth Sam Harris podcast that gives the science behind the practice. Bit heavy and technical but a great listen. “a wandering mind is an unhappy mind”

Research concludes that psychiatric diagnosis is scientifically meaningless!

We’ve know this for some time and more needs to be done to normalise emotional pain and distress rather than label people as ill.

Researchers conclude many psychiatric diagnoses are scientifically worthless as tools for identifying discrete mental health disorders.
