World Federation for Medical Education - WFME

World Federation for Medical Education - WFME Enhancing the quality of medical education worldwide Foundation. The Constitution was revised in 1988, in 1994, and further amended in April 2014.

WFME came into existence in September 1972 at a meeting in Copenhagen, when its Constitution was signed by representatives of the Regional Associations for Medical Education, by the representative of the Director-General of the World Health Organization, by the President of the World Medical Association, and other witnesses. The Constitution was drawn up by a WFME Planning Group which met in Mainz in April 1972 with the support of the Josiah Macy Jr. The concept of WFME originated much earlier, at a meeting of medical educators in New Delhi in 1966. As well as being registered in England and Wales, WFME is registered in France since July 2015.

Wrapping up an incredible few days at the AMSA 2026 Medical Education Conference in Lagos, Nigeria! 🇳🇬

WFME was honoured to actively engage in enriching discussions with a global community of experts, policymakers, educators and future doctors, all focused on shaping the future of medical education.

We were also encouraged to hear Jim Campbell, former Director of the WHO Health Workforce Department, highlight the key role WFME plays in strengthening knowledge and intelligence around the global health workforce. 🎓

We appreciated a thoughtful session on Arts in Medicine, facilitated by Dr Kunle Adewale, Executive Director of the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship, which highlighted how creative and therapeutic activities contribute to public health and support patient well-being, recovery, and dignity.

This type of engagement reminds us of the impact of collective action: because investing in medical education today means a healthier world for all of us tomorrow. 🌍

WFME is thrilled to share that we have officially been welcomed at the AMSA Medical Education Conference 2026 held on 26-29 March 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria — and we are proud to be part of it! 🇳🇬

AMSA 2026 was officially opened by His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, who presented the bold Lagos State Development Plan 2052 — a vision to increase medical student intake from 150 to 1,000 per year by engaging over 300 general hospitals as training sites, addressing the region's critical deficit of 23,000 physicians.

It is a privilege to be a supporter of this conference and to stand alongside medical schools, educators, and students from across Africa and beyond, united by a shared mission to strengthen health systems through quality education. This year's theme "Increasing Capacity and Retention of the Global Health Workforce" couldn't be more timely. 🎓✨

In 2024, the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) carried out a global survey of recognised basic medical education (BME) agencies. Many of you may remember that we shared the early findings during the BME Recognition Symposium at the WFME World Conference in Bangkok in May 2025.

A big thank‑you to all the agencies who took part — your input has been invaluable.
We’re pleased to share that the full results have been published in Medical Teacher! 🎉

The article, “Towards a continuing quality improvement culture through the WFME Recognition Programme,” is now live on Taylor & Francis Online.

This publication marks an important step in supporting continuous quality improvement across medical education worldwide. We’re proud to see this work out in the world and hope you’ll take a moment to read and share it.

It’s ! A time to celebrate the outstanding contribution trustees make to their charities and the difference they help deliver across communities and sectors.

As a registered charity, WFME is proud to recognise and thank our own trustees for their invaluable service. Their time, insight, and leadership help guide our mission to advance the quality of medical education worldwide. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to good governance, strategic oversight, and global collaboration.

Today is the International Day of Care and Support — a global reminder that care work is essential to inclusive, resilient societies.

At WFME, we affirm that care is not only a value but shared responsibility. In medical education, this means fostering environments that uphold dignity, equity, and wellbeing for learners, educators, and patients alike.

Our Declaration reinforces these principles, calling for systems that are inclusive, age-sensitive, and responsive to the needs of all.

Let’s continue to invest in care — visibly, meaningfully, and together.
