When Sandie first met John through our Compassionate Neighbours programme, she had no idea how much her life would change.

What started as a simple introduction turned into weekly breakfasts, shared laughter, and a friendship that’s supported them both through life’s hardest moments.

From feeling lonely to feeling connected, Sandie’s story is a powerful reminder of what compassion can do.

And for John, volunteering has been just as meaningful.
“It’s a two-way thing… a friendship blossoms.”

This is what Compassionate Neighbours is all about.
If you’ve ever thought about giving your time to support someone in your community, or if you know someone who could benefit from a friendly face and a listening ear, this could be the perfect place to start.

What a week we've had saying a big heartfelt thank you and goodbye to our Chief Executive, Kate Heaps, after nearly 20 years with Community Hospice, including 16 years in post.

Kate’s leadership, compassion and unwavering commitment have shaped who we are today helping us reach more people, in more ways, when they need care and support most. Her legacy will be felt for years to come.

As we look ahead, we’re pleased to share that our Deputy Chief Executive, Aneta Saunders, will step into the role of Interim Chief Executive for the next 12 months. Having already played a key role in leading the organisation, Aneta brings continuity, deep understanding and a shared commitment to our mission, and we know the hospice will be in very good hands.

We’ve already been speaking with Aneta about the next chapter for the hospice, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with you soon. In the meantime, we wish Kate every happiness in what comes next.

Thank you, Kate and congratulations, Aneta.

🏃‍♂️ “I want to raise a thousand trillion!”

That’s Harry. He’s six.

This spring, he’s taking on his very first Hospice Mini Marathon alongside his mum and nan, turning it into a special three-generation challenge. But this isn’t just about running.

It’s about a little boy who loves sport, believes he’s the fastest in his class, and is already determined to make a difference for others. 🧡

From big dreams to heartfelt reasons for supporting hospice care, Harry’s story is one you won’t forget.

We’re so proud to share that the Royal Borough of Greenwich has awarded us funding towards our inpatient unit redevelopment 🧡

This support comes from their Section 106 programme, which helps invest in projects that make a real difference to the local community.

This important investment will support the redevelopment of our inpatient unit, including private ensuite rooms that give patients and their loved ones the space, comfort and dignity to be together at the end of life.

Aneta Saunders, Deputy Chief Executive, said:

“We’re incredibly grateful to the Royal Borough of Greenwich for this support. As a charity, partnerships like this make a real difference. This funding will help us continue improving our hospice so that people receiving care, and those closest to them, can spend meaningful time together in a comfortable and welcoming environment.”

We were also pleased to welcome Councillor Mariam Lolavar, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and Borough of Sanctuary, and Lisa Wilson, Integrated Commissioning Director for Adult Services, who recently visited the hospice to meet some of the team delivering this work.

A heartfelt thank you to the Royal Borough of Greenwich for investing in the future of our hospice - your support will make a lasting difference to patients and families when it matters most 🧡

Our Story

We are a local charity, caring for over 2,500 people every year, and all of our care is provided free of charge to people living in the Boroughs of Royal Greenwich and Bexley. We provide high-quality, compassionate care and support to people with all types of terminal illnesses, their families and their carers. Our care is delivered to people at home, in care homes, in our Hospice beds, in our Day Hospice and in hospital.

We provide holistic care that goes beyond physical needs – offering spiritual, social and psychological care, advice and support wherever needed. We also support and educate healthcare professionals to deliver high quality, individualised and co-ordinated care to people with all terminal illnesses.

We receive only around a third of our funding from the NHS. That means we need to fundraise £5m every year from local people, businesses and organisations to continue to fund our services.
