Talking about death and dying isn’t easy – but it’s important.

It’s why we’ve launched a new short film that explores the value in having conversations about end of life care, through real stories and diverse perspectives.

In this bonus clip, Delberth encourages everyone to start the conversation.

Watch the full film and learn how to start planning: www.guysandstthomas.nhs.uk/letstalk

[Video description: Delberth is a Black British Caribbean man with brown skin and grey neatly trimmed facial hair. He wears a bright orange tracksuit top and peaked cap, with sunglasses resting on top of the cap.]

Strike action is taking place at our hospitals and community sites from 7am on Friday 14 November until 7am on Wednesday 19 November.

We'll contact you if your care or your child's care is affected. If you have an appointment at any of our hospitals or community sites on these days, please assume this is going ahead unless you have been told otherwise.

Our emergency department (A&E) at St Thomas' Hospital will remain open during the strike action to treat people who need emergency or urgent care. We expect it to be very busy.

If you need medical advice but it’s not an emergency, please use a different service to get the care you need. You could:

➡️ call NHS 111 or visit www.111.nhs.uk
➡️ make an appointment with your GP
➡️ go to a local pharmacist

We're sorry for any distress that delays to your care may cause.

Say hi to Dr Raselle Miller, a lead clinical psychologist who supports the psychological health and wellbeing of our diverse workforce —promoting cultural sensitivity, inclusion and belonging across the Trust. 👋

Raselle said: “At a time when issues of inequality and racism continue to affect communities, our work reminds us how vital compassion, awareness and psychological safety are in the workplace. We do this by developing wellbeing initiatives that meet the needs of all staff.

“Our NHS staff are impacted by so much professionally and personally, creating spaces where people feel seen, respected and valued matters more than ever. It’s with these experiences that staff can provide quality care.”

Last week, Evelina London Children's Charity threw a fantastic 20th birthday party for the Evelina London Children's Hospital building 🎉

Staff members and families tried their hand at the tombola, snapped some pictures in the photo booth, enjoyed delicious birthday cake, and had their charity merch personalised.

Today we commemorated Armistice Day with services around the Trust.

A 2-minute silence was held at 11am to remember those that were injured or gave their lives in active service. This is particularly important here at the Trust, given our close relationship with our Armed Forces colleagues, veterans and community, and our commitment to supporting them.

We were delighted to receive this special message from our Patron, HRH the Princess of Wales, in recognition of the 20th anniversary of our Evelina London Children's Hospital building:

As Patron of Evelina, I'm delighted to join everyone at Evelina London Children's Hospital in celebrating the anniversary of its iconic hospital building.

Over the past two decades, this extraordinary space has enabled Evelina London to care for nearly three times as many children and young people as when it first opened. It is a place that symbolises love, healing and hope and has had such an impact on countless lives.

As I know from my visits, the building's bright, welcoming spaces and wonderful light-filled atrium ensure children feel safe, supported and nurtured as they face whatever challenges lie ahead.

What makes this building so special is the remarkable staff, whose compassion and expertise shine through in every corner of the hospital, and create an environment where families feel cared for and uplifted.

Looking ahead, I am filled with hope for Evelina's future. As it continues to grow, even more children will benefit from the world-class care that defines Evelina, a place where healing begins with connection, and every child is cherished.

Catherine.

Evelina London has been working with families to create future cancer care spaces that feel safe, comfortable and supportive.

The voices of children, young people and their families have informed each and every step of the design stages for the new areas, from creative workshops and online design sessions to selecting the architects for the project.

Specialist designers Art in Site invited Japanese manga artist Kiriko Kubo to one of the workshops with children and young people. She worked with them to create artwork for the new cancer day treatment areas in our Children's Day Treatment Centre using the concept of a 'space garden', in keeping with the space theme of the building.

Guy's and St Thomas' chef Scott Ferguson never thought he would walk again, after a stroke left him paralysed down his left side.

Nearly 3 years later, Scott can not only walk but has gone back to work, re-learned how to cook and made it to the finals for NHS Chef of the Year.

Scott, who has worked as a sous chef at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals for 13 years, was devastated after he suddenly had a stroke while on holiday with his family in the Canary Islands in 2022.

He said: “Psychologically, emotionally, physically it was so hard to think about coming back to work. I have no sensation on my left side, so I’d have to be so careful not to slip and cut myself. I knew I would have to find new ways of doing things.”

But a friend and fellow hospital chef Nedko Rusev spoke to him throughout his recovery and urged him to get himself fit enough to return to work.

Scott added: “Coming back to work made a big difference for me. It gave me a purpose again.

“I’m grateful to Ned for helping me through all this, and supporting me to come back to work. It breaks my heart that I can’t do everything I did before, but I’m adapting and finding new ways to work. It’s been great.”
