Our Story

The British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) www.bcom.ac.uk was founded in 1936 by Stanley Lief, the eminent naturopathic osteopath, and has developed into one of the largest osteopathic educational institutions in the UK . It is a statutory regulated and accredited training facility, educational charity and centre of excellence in Osteopathic education, regulated by the Osteopaths act of 1993 and accredited by the General Osteopathic Council. Since its formation BCOM has achieved an international reputation for the professional excellence of its teaching and qualifications.

Based in Hampstead, North London, BCOM was the first institution in the UK to offer an osteopathic honours degree and has achieved Recognised Qualification (RQ) status ‘approval without conditions’ by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), in the renewal of recognition review for quality in Higher Education for the past three consecutive reviews.

BCOM has been running its much-praised four year undergraduate Masters in Osteopathy (M.Ost) since 2008. The course integrates academic, scientific, anatomical, theoretical and research knowledge with applied clinical osteopathic and naturopathic skills, and is validated by the University of Plymouth. BCOM also offers a BSc (Hons) Osteopathy Conversion Degree for Diplomates, a 10-month post-basic training course that serves as an academic top-up to an osteopathic diploma. PgCerts are offered in Children’s Osteopathy, Osteopathic Sports Care and Human Nutrition.

BCOM has a strong research profile which helps inform teaching and learning throughout the curriculum. BCOM is involved in a number of areas of research, all of which link to osteopathy and naturopathy. Research Publications are frequently published in peer review journals, and conference proceedings. The International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research (ICAOR) was founded by BCOM in 1999. Since its launch ICAOR has become a global event hosting osteopaths in Australia, Brazil, Europe and the USA.
