Glaucoma Awareness Week 👁️

This Glaucoma Awareness Week, we’ve worked with our team at St Ann’s Hospital, Moorfields, to share the facts behind some of the common myths about glaucoma.

Throughout the week, we’re highlighting key information to help raise awareness and encourage regular eye tests, as early glaucoma often has no symptoms.

One common myth is that if your eye doesn’t hurt, there is nothing seriously wrong. However, most types of glaucoma are painless. Damage can happen slowly and silently, which is why regular eye checks are so important, they are key to early detection.

Glaucoma Awareness Week 👁️

This Glaucoma Awareness Week, we’ve worked with our team at St Ann’s Hospital, Moorfields, to share the facts behind some of the common myths about glaucoma.

This week we're highlighting key information to help raise awareness and encourage regular eye tests, as early glaucoma often has no symptoms.

One common myth is that glaucoma only has one cause: high eye pressure. However, glaucoma is actually caused by damage to the optic nerve. While high eye pressure is a major risk factor, some people can still develop glaucoma even when their eye pressure is within the normal range.

Regular eye tests are key to detecting glaucoma early.

To mark World Glaucoma Day, we share new research into the links between glaucoma and myopia, using large-scale anonymised health data curated by Insight Health Data Research Hub at Moorfields.

Both glaucoma and myopia are growing public health concerns, which are being tackled by clinical optometrist and Moorfields research fellow Caitlin Campbell. By analysing data from more than 200,000 eyes across a decade, Caitlin aims to identify whether the patterns of vision change in glaucoma differ between myopic and non-myopic eyes, in ways that could lead to improved glaucoma detection and management.

Glaucoma Awareness Week 👁️

This Glaucoma Awareness Week, we’ve worked with our team at St Ann’s Hospital, Moorfields, to share the facts behind some of the common myths about glaucoma.

One common myth is that glaucoma only affects people over a certain age. While the risk does increase as we get older, glaucoma can actually affect people of any age — including adults, children and even infants.

Family history and certain eye conditions can also increase your risk, which is why regular eye tests are so important.

Throughout the week we’ll be sharing more information to help raise awareness and support early detection.

Throughout the week, we’ll be highlighting key information to help raise awareness and encourage regular eye tests, as early glaucoma often has no symptoms.

One commonly held belief is that if your vision seems perfectly fine, you cannot have glaucoma. However, it is still possible to have early glaucoma. In its early stages, glaucoma often has no symptoms, and many people do not notice any changes until significant vision loss has already occurred.

Regular eye tests are key to detecting glaucoma early.
