✨ As we look ahead to 2026, we’re reflecting on 2025 at King’s...

Over the past year, our incredible colleagues across the Trust have achieved so much, including:

📽 Our Major Trauma teams featured in Netflix documentary series Critical: Between Life and Death, highlighting the life-saving work of London’s Major Trauma Network.

🏆 Global Recognition: Named by Newsweek as one of the World’s Best Specialised Hospitals, with our Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Gastroenterology services achieving prestigious global top 10 rankings.

🩺 National Leaders in Diabetes: The Princess Royal University Hospital became only the second inpatient diabetes service in the UK to achieve National DCAP Accreditation. The team also ranked 2nd in the UK (out of 834 sites) for Insulin Safety Week excellence.

🎶 Pioneering Surgery: 65-year-old Denise Bacon played her clarinet during a four-hour awake brain surgery at King’s. This Deep Brain Stimulation allowed our surgeons to see her tremors reduce in real-time, helping her return to the music she loves.

🚑 Urgent Care Excellence: Recognised as one of the top 20 most improved NHS Trusts nationally for urgent and emergency care performance.

💡 Innovation and Research: From developing the UK’s first nurse-led surgical pathway for elective spinal procedures to enrolling our youngest-ever participant (age 14) in a global ALS trial, our teams are pioneering new models of care to reduce waiting lists and improve recovery.

🧠 We also launched a groundbreaking trial using brain implants to treat severe alcohol addiction, helping patients manage cravings.

🤝 Community: We launched new services, including a dedicated Outreach Therapy service across South London to help patients recover faster at home and reduce hospital stays.

💙 Patient reunions: Consultant Mr Om Lahoti, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, was reunited with patient Martin Bailey, providing specialist orthopaedic care for Martin’s son exactly 23 years after treating Martin himself.

📱 Support for Families: Funded by King's College Hospital Charity, we launched a new secure video app across our neonatal units, helping families stay connected with their premature babies through real-time photo and video updates.

These milestones, and others, reflect the dedication and teamwork demonstrated daily by .

🏥 🌿 King’s Outdoor Critical Care Unit and garden will be complete in 2026.

A sanctuary high above the hospital, it will offer many benefits for critically ill patients who can experience fresh air, light, and the healing power of nature as part of their recovery.

This pioneering space will complete the vision for our new Critical Care Centre – giving even our most seriously ill patients the chance to receive world-class medical care while seeing the sky and feeling the breeze.

With your support, we can keep creating spaces that don’t just save lives – but help them heal, grow, and begin anew.

🎄 Chaplaincy spreading festive cheer across King’s.

In the lead-up to Christmas, our Chaplaincy team brought people together through a series of celebrations and initiatives across King’s.

On 18 December, a carol service was held in St Luke’s Chapel at King’s College Hospital, with further services taking place at Orpington Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital. These were warmly received by staff, patients and visitors.

This Christmas also saw the launch of a new Multi-Faith and Belief Trolley, which volunteers took around the wards offering Christmas cards, festive items and supportive conversation. While introduced for Christmas, the trolley will continue to be used throughout the year to mark key festivals across different faiths and beliefs.

We’re grateful to Friends of King’s for the use of the trolley and for funding the Christmas cards.

🎄💙 This Christmas, we’re recognising colleagues whose work continues quietly and compassionately behind the scenes.

For teams in our Mortuary Department at King’s, the festive period can be especially challenging, supporting families at some of the most difficult moments of their lives, while continuing to care with kindness and professionalism.

💬 Cerys Hagon, Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT), shared what Christmas means for her team:

“The holidays are a tough time to lose someone, as memories are already thick in the air and the cold dark days make it hard to see any glimmers of light. We try our best to ensure loved ones know they're not alone, offering the services of our amazing chaplains or local charities to them for any extra support.

“Many families wish to lay their loved ones to rest before Christmas, so we work around the clock to help them book registry appointments, perform post mortems and release patients to funeral directors as soon as we can to ease their stress.

“It's been a heavy year, both for our families and our team, having lost some family members of our own. Having small traditions like our Christmas lunch keeps morale high and reminds us of how amazing Team King’s is.

“I hope the next year is lighter and more hopeful for everyone.”

💙 Thank you to Cerys and the Mortuary team for the care, compassion and humanity they show every day, especially during the Christmas period.

🎄 Day 11 of our

This countdown, we’re recognising an extraordinary act of heroism by our colleague.

Congratulations to Cecelia “Ces” Paypa-Sun, Senior Clinical Site Manager at King’s College Hospital, who has received a Metropolitan Police Service Borough Commander’s Commendation for her actions after witnessing a road traffic collision earlier this year.

While travelling in central London, Ces came across the scene of a serious collision where a driver was unconscious and had no pulse. Using her Advanced Life Support training, Ces immediately began CPR, continuing until paramedics arrived and the patient began breathing independently.

💬 "I reclined the patient's car seat to perform CPR, but there was still no room to do so," Ces said. "My husband and I removed the patient from the car, and I continued to perform CPR in the middle of the road.

"I was doing CPR for so long that my husband had to take over for a short while because I was getting tired. It was his first time performing CPR."

Thanks to Ces’s quick thinking and decisive action, the patient is now recovering. Ces was later contacted by the patient’s family to thank her for helping save his life.

Ces has since been formally recognised by the Metropolitan Police for her care, compassion and empathy, receiving her commendation at a ceremony held at Chigwell Hall.

💬 Ces said:

“My first instinct is to help. If I can help, then why wouldn’t I?”

🎄💙 This Christmas, we’re proud to recognise Ces and the difference a person’s actions can make.
